The Opportunity

The City of Saskatoon is seeking a dedicated Recreation Technician 10 to join its Community Services team. What You'll Do

As a Recreation Technician 10, you will play a crucial role in the successful delivery of recreation programs and activities. Your responsibilities will include monitoring program quality, providing leadership to staff, and ensuring operational excellence in accordance with established plans and standards. Key duties include:

• Implement and monitor activities scheduled for the program site, in accordance with directives identified in the activity plan and annual schedule.
• Monitor participant enrolment and make adjustments to the program schedule to accommodate demand.
• Monitor the quality of all aspects of activities delivered by the Department or in cooperation with external agencies to maintain customer satisfaction and ensure technical standards are met.
• Provide day-to-day leadership through supervision, coaching, training, and orientation to support staff development. Set clear expectations, monitor staffing levels, and ensure appropriate staffing for daily programming.
• Complete written performance assessments, and support recruitment and hiring processes under the direction of the site administrator and oversight of an out-of-scope manager.
• Assist with scheduling of activity space and the identification of activities in accordance with the program planning cycle, working collaboratively with and receiving direction from the program design team.
• Assist with preparing the site for various events, providing support to meet the operational needs of the user, such as set-up, staffing, and maintaining program equipment.
• Prepare and administer contracts for contracted program staff, as directed.
• Coordinate, participate in, and evaluate orientation and in-service training programs for program staff.
• Purchase equipment and supplies for scheduled activities in accordance with the budget and maintain an inventory of assets.
• Ensure program space is ready for activities delivered by the Department and agencies renting the facility.
• Provide interpretation of program and rental policies and procedures for the public and staff.
• Deal with customers to resolve issues, respond to enquiries, and resolve conflict.
• Assist with activity evaluation by compiling statistics, providing rationale, and preparing recommendations for program operations.
• Prepare written documents as required, which may include program summary evaluations, memos, orientation outlines, and checklists.

Skills and Experience

To excel in this role, you will bring a blend of educational background, practical experience, and essential skills in recreation program management and staff leadership. The City of Saskatoon values a diverse and inclusive workforce, and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.

• Graduation from a two-year, post-secondary program in Recreation, Kinesiology, or a relevant field.
• One year’s related experience in implementing and monitoring the delivery of aquatic, fitness, and/or recreation programs preferred, including experience related to staff supervision, performance monitoring, and coaching.
• Possession of valid recognized standard first aid and CPR certificates.
• Swimming ability and comfort in an aquatic environment, supported by certifications such as Red Cross Swim Kids 10 or Life Saving Society Swimmer 6, is an asset.
• Possession of Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association Fitness Leadership, or other recognized certification in fitness, is an asset.

Beyond formal qualifications, candidates should demonstrate the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

• Knowledge of the theory, philosophy, standards, trends, and practices of recreation program planning, particularly in a municipal setting.
• Knowledge of the methods of evaluation related to aquatic, fitness, and recreation programs.
• Demonstrated ability to oversee the implementation, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of aquatic, fitness, and/or recreation programs.
• Ability to express ideas and concepts effectively orally and in writing to staff and the public.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor, volunteers, and the public.
• Skilled in operating computer-based systems and tools, with the capacity to learn new software quickly and work confidently in a digital, technology-driven environment.

Who You'll Work With

You will work under the supervision of the Site Administrator, collaborating closely with the program design team throughout the program planning cycle. This role involves providing day-to-day leadership, coaching, and training to support program staff development, ensuring appropriate staffing levels for daily programming. You will also interact with external agencies and the public, resolving issues and responding to enquiries to maintain high customer satisfaction for all recreation activities.
