About the Role

The City of Saskatoon is seeking a dedicated Engineer-in-Training for a temporary, full-time opportunity within the Transportation and Construction Division. This role is crucial for overseeing small-scale infrastructure projects, contributing directly to the development and maintenance of Saskatoon's civic infrastructure. As an Engineer I, you will play a vital part in ensuring that all projects meet stringent standards and specifications, supporting the vibrant community of Saskatoon, SK. Responsibilities

As an Engineer I, your responsibilities will encompass a broad range of activities essential for the successful execution of municipal infrastructure projects. You will be instrumental in coordinating various stages of project development and ensuring compliance with established guidelines.

  • Coordinate the planning, design, and construction of municipal infrastructure projects and programs.
  • Coordinate engineering site assessments and maintain accurate records.
  • Coordinate site inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Perform audits of construction sites to ensure compliance with specifications and Occupational Health & Safety requirements.
  • Communicate with contractors, other civic departments, and external agencies to provide contract administration and ensure compliance with Civic and Provincial standards, specifications, and regulations.
  • Review and provide recommendations relating to technical specifications, construction materials, and methods of construction.
  • Assist with the tendering process for operating programs and projects, including preliminary documents, cost estimates, detailed design drawing preparation, material selections, and specification reviews.
  • Analyse invoices, work within the City’s financial software system, and ensure timely progress of payments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To succeed in this Engineer-in-Training role with the City of Saskatoon, candidates must meet specific educational and professional registration requirements, alongside demonstrating key abilities and skills.

  • Degree in engineering.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).
  • Experience in municipal construction and project management would be considered an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s Licence.

Additionally, candidates should possess the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with civic staff, civic officials, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
