What You'll Do as a Building Code Engineer

In this dynamic role, you will apply your engineering expertise to ensure all building and construction projects meet stringent safety and regulatory standards. Your responsibilities will include:

• Reviewing and approving drawings of commercial buildings to ensure compliance with life, fire, health, and construction safety requirements of the National Building Code of Canada, the Saskatoon Building Bylaw, The Construction Codes Act, and The Fire Prevention Act, advising on any drawing deficiencies.
• Researching and assisting with the development of Division operational policies, based on interpretations of various Acts and codes, and instructing other Division members and the public in their application.
• Conducting studies and analyses, and completing inspection reports for a variety of engineering conditions within the Building Standards Division's responsibility.
• Assisting property owners, developers, and consultants with enquiries pertaining to the requirements of the National Building Code, the Saskatoon Building Bylaw, and The Construction Codes Act, including reviewing preliminary drawings.
• Receiving and processing commercial permit applications in the absence of the Commercial Permit Supervisor.
• Assisting with the evaluation and development of new and alternative methods and procedures, such as the use of computers, for improving efficiency and service to the public.
• Analysing lot severance and consolidation, reporting any building code implications that may arise.
• Performing on-site inspections of various construction projects as required.
• Conducting preliminary reviews of condominium conversions prior to reporting to Council.
• Performing other related duties as assigned to support the Building Standards Department.

What You'll Bring to the City of Saskatoon

To excel in this Building Code Engineer position, you will possess a strong educational background and practical experience in engineering, coupled with comprehensive knowledge of relevant Canadian codes and acts. We are looking for a professional who can contribute immediately to our team in Saskatoon.

• Degree in civil or mechanical engineering.
• Four to six years' related experience in building and construction.
• Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a professional engineer in the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within two years after hire, a Saskatchewan Building Official Class 3 Licence.

Beyond formal qualifications, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a robust understanding of the regulatory landscape governing building and construction in Canada and specifically in Saskatoon, including:

• Thorough working knowledge of the National Building Code, The Construction Codes Act and Regulations, and the Saskatoon Building Bylaw.
• Considerable knowledge of the National Fire Code, The Cities Act, National Fire Protection Association Codes, Canadian Standards Association standards, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada and Warnock Hersey Standards, Zoning Bylaw, and a familiarity with Provincial acts and regulations related to building construction and safety.
• Knowledge of the materials, procedures, and techniques used in building construction.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, design professionals, contractors, developers, and others in the construction industry.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and respond to periodic or seasonal increases in workload.
