Under the supervision of the Urban Biological Services Supervisor, this position primarily assists with the monitoring and control of various biological concerns, including mosquitoes, small mammals, Dutch elm disease, and other insects and plant diseases. This role is essential for delivering effective urban biological services across the city.

What You'll Do: Key Duties and Responsibilities

As an Urban Biological Services Labourer, your duties will involve a variety of tasks critical to maintaining Saskatoon's environmental health. You will be responsible for implementing control measures and monitoring populations of various pests and diseases, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations. This role offers a dynamic environment where your ability to adapt to different tasks will be highly valued.

• Control and monitor the population of mosquitoes, Dutch elm disease, and other insects and plant diseases.
• May also be assigned duties related to hard-surface weed control, firewood collection, or ground squirrel management.
• Ensure that all pesticide products are stored, handled and used according to the appropriate Federal and Provincial legislation.
• Operate and perform minor repairs to a variety of equipment used in mosquito control and other pest management operations.
• Support and promote a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
• Support and promote the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations in addition to the City of Saskatoon’s Administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and departmental procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications for Success

To excel in this role, candidates should possess a combination of education, practical experience, and essential skills. The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team is key, alongside a commitment to safety and environmental best practices.

• Grade 12 education.
• Possession or the ability to obtain a valid Mosquito and Biting Fly, Structural or Landscape Class, Saskatchewan Pesticide Applicator Licence.
• Three months' related horticultural/agricultural experience.
• Possession of a valid Saskatchewan full Class 5 Driver’s Licence is required, or at minimum, a Class 5 (Novice 2).
• Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

Beyond formal qualifications, we are looking for individuals with specific knowledge, abilities, and skills that will contribute to their success in this hands-on role within Saskatoon.

• Physical ability to perform the assigned duties under a variety of weather conditions.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and civic employees.
• Ability to work in a computerized/digital environment, including the use of Microsoft Outlook, SAP and mobile devices.
• Knowledge and ability to use a variety of hand tools.

The nature of these urban biological services may also involve non-standard work hours.

• Shift work and weekend work may be involved.
