Fire Service Instructor (EMS) - City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon

Role Overview

This permanent full-time Fire Service Instructor (EMS) position with the City of Saskatoon is a key role within the Saskatoon Fire Department's Staff Development and Safety division. Reporting to the Assistant Chief, Staff Development and Safety, the successful candidate will be responsible for the comprehensive development, presentation, and evaluation of essential training programs related to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This role is crucial for maintaining high standards of fire and EMS training for the community of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, ensuring continuous professional development for fire service personnel.

Responsibilities

• Assists in ensuring that EMS training programs align with Department objectives, NFPA Standards, Saskatchewan College of Paramedics, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and Saskatchewan Health Authority Provincial Medical Director or local medical advisor, or other relevant standards.
• Plans, coordinates, and facilitates the delivery of vital EMS training programs both within the department and with local partners and stakeholders in Saskatoon.
• Assists with the development of new EMS training programs, incorporating industry best practices, local governance, and internal requirements.
• Provides direct training, drills, in-services, and mentorship to all on-shift instructors, fostering their professional development.
• Formats training lessons and curriculum into the Saskatoon Fire Department’s Learning Management System.
• Assists with evaluating EMS training programs to ensure their effectiveness and continuous improvement.
• Oversees licensing and registration renewals for EMS credentials, including SCoP, ITLS, Heart and Stroke, and MFR.
• Assists with the development of evaluation instruments as required to ensure validity and reliability of training.
• Conducts training programs on new equipment and techniques implemented within the Saskatoon Fire Department.
• Performs routine audits on EMS-related documentation to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements in Saskatchewan.
• Assists with the delivery of training in other programs as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring

• Grade 12 education.
• Must meet NFPA 1001 Professional Qualifications Standard or equivalent to 1st Class Firefighter.
• Listed as a practicing unrestricted Primary Care Paramedic (2011 National Occupational Competency Profile) on the current members roster of the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics.
• Several years' progressive experience within the Fire Fighting Division.
• NFPA 1041 “Professional Qualifications for Fire Service Instructor” Level I certification.
• Must attain NFPA 1041 Professional Qualifications for Fire Service Instructor” Level II within one year of hire.
• Current International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) BASIC certificate required.
• Completion of, or ability to achieve certification upon hire for:
• International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) INSTRUCTOR certificate
• CPR Instructor Trainer certificate
• Medical First Responder Instructor certificate
• Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
• Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
• Considerable knowledge of the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics (SCoP) current protocol manual, as well as SCoP annual continuing education and registration requirements.
• Demonstrated ability in the design and delivery of training and development programs.
• Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with civic staff, civic officials, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
• Ability to adapt to changing technology.
• Knowledge of current adult education development instructional methodologies.
• Skill in the operation of a computer using the Microsoft Office Suite and industry-specific software.

Perks and Benefits

This permanent full-time position offers a competitive annual salary ranging from $136,158.72 to $139,506.96 CAD (2023 rates) for 37.5 weekly hours. As an IAFF 80 position, it adheres to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
