About the Role at Microsoft Canada
Microsoft is actively seeking passionate innovators to join its Azure Data engineering team in Canada, contributing to the transformation of analytics in the world of data. This team is at the forefront of building the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and fostering a robust data culture. The Data Integration team within Microsoft Fabric is crucial, enabling organizations to connect, move, and shape data across their entire data estate. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of data connectivity across Microsoft's extensive ecosystem. This position sits at the intersection of platform engineering, data connectivity, and quality, offering significant opportunities to modernize connector technologies, develop large-scale validation systems, and enhance authentication and reliability scenarios. Your technical expertise will ensure that millions of Power BI, Fabric, and Excel users can reliably connect to the data essential for their business operations, leveraging the power of Microsoft Azure. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience with cutting-edge software and data solutions.
Responsibilities and Technical Expertise
In this engineering role, a core responsibility involves designing and implementing automated validation frameworks to ensure the reliability and quality of Power Query connectivity experiences across hundreds of diverse data sources. You will drive modernization and migration efforts for data connectivity technologies, including comprehensive validation, compatibility testing, and ensuring production readiness for new connector platforms. A significant aspect of the position is investigating and resolving complex technical issues related to authentication, connectivity, performance, and end-to-end data access scenarios in both cloud and on-premises environments. Collaboration is key, as you will partner with connector, SDK, and engineering systems teams to build scalable quality signals, diagnostics, and test coverage, proactively preventing regressions. Furthermore, you will be instrumental in improving test automation, reliability, and infrastructure to increase engineering confidence and accelerate the delivery of new features and connectors. Analysing telemetry, test results, and customer-reported issues will be essential to identify systemic reliability improvements and drive long-term quality investments within Microsoft's data ecosystem. Your contributions to technical leadership through design reviews, mentoring, and establishing engineering best practices for validation, testing, and operational excellence will be highly valued. This role demands strong software engineering principles and a deep understanding of data systems.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Candidates interested in this Senior Software Engineer position must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, coupled with at least four years of technical engineering experience. This experience should include proficient coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python. Preferred qualifications include a Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with six or more years of technical engineering experience, or a Bachelor's Degree with eight or more years of experience in the aforementioned programming languages. Additional valuable experience includes developing software in C#, Java, C++, or Python, and designing and implementing automated testing, validation, or quality engineering solutions for complex software systems. Familiarity with data connectivity technologies like APIs, databases, drivers, connectors, ODBC, JDBC, or ADBC is highly beneficial. Experience with SQL, data platforms, query processing, or data integration technologies, as well as investigating and resolving complex reliability, performance, authentication, or end-to-end integration issues, is also important. Prior experience working with cloud services and distributed systems, particularly Microsoft Azure, is a strong asset. A solid understanding of modern engineering practices, including source control, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and automated testing, is expected. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with a passion for improving software quality, reliability, and customer experience, are crucial for success in this Microsoft role.
