About the Opportunity
This temporary position, with a contract duration of up to 24 months, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the City of Mississauga’s significant Rapid Transit Program. As a Landscape Architect, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the public realm and streetscape vision for these vital transit corridors. Working within the Transportation and Works Department, specifically the Rapid Transit Program Office, you will collaborate with a diverse multi-disciplinary City team and external stakeholders, including the Region of Peel, Metrolinx, and various developers. This role is crucial for ensuring that the city’s infrastructure development not only meets functional requirements but also enhances the aesthetic and environmental quality of Mississauga’s urban landscape. You will balance the complex infrastructure needs of street trees, adjacent development, and active transportation to create functional and attractive streetscapes that serve the community. This is a key administration role within City of Mississauga jobs, contributing directly to the city's growth and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide essential landscape architecture support throughout the development and delivery phases of the City of Mississauga’s Rapid Transit Program. This involves meticulously reviewing conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design drawings and documents from both City consultants and third-party stakeholders. A core duty includes delivering the public realm and streetscape vision by providing comprehensive comments on project design documents and coordinating feedback from various City streetscape stakeholders. You will also be responsible for responding to design and construction Requests For Information (RFIs) promptly. Furthermore, the role entails supporting the review of PUCC applications and utility plans, ensuring the safeguarding and advancement of critical streetscape features such as tree planting, soil volume, pedestrian lighting, paving, and active-transportation facilities. Reviewing development applications, including site plans and frontage works, is also vital to ensure coordination with rapid transit public realm, landscape, urban design, and transit infrastructure requirements.
Qualifications and Expertise
To excel in this Landscape Architect role, candidates must possess a University Graduate Degree from a recognized program in Landscape Architecture, complemented by a minimum of five years of progressively responsible design and construction experience. Full membership, or eligibility for full membership, in the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) is a mandatory requirement. While experience in both the private and public sectors is preferred, strong knowledge of design and construction details, particularly those related to public realm and streetscape design, is essential. A comprehensive understanding of construction methods and practices, including landscape specifications, sequencing, and constructability, is also critical. The ability to review development applications, site plans, and streetscape submissions within an urban corridor or infrastructure context is a significant asset. Excellent design, report writing, problem-solving, and time management skills are expected, alongside proficiency in Microsoft Office and sound file management.
