Key Duties of a Skate Program Instructor

As a Skate Program Instructor, you will be responsible for delivering engaging and safe skating lessons, ensuring a positive experience for all participants. Your duties will include:

• Instructing skate lessons effectively.
• Ensuring that the program location, equipment, and supplies meet all health and safety standards.
• Prioritising and ensuring the safety of all participants during skating activities.
• Performing necessary administrative tasks to support the efficient operation of the program.
• Assisting with the planning and coordination of special events related to recreation.
• Taking prompt action to deal with incidents, accidents, problems, and emergencies, adhering to divisional policies and procedures.
• Interacting positively and professionally with staff and participants.
• Attending and actively participating in required meetings and training sessions.
• Following the principles of Healthy Child Development (HIGH FIVE®) in the planning and delivery of all programs.

What You'll Bring to the Role

To excel as a Skate Program Instructor with the City of Toronto, you will need to demonstrate a commitment to safety, excellent instructional skills, and a passion for recreation. Key qualifications include:

• Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
• Current Basic First Aid certification as recognized by the WSIB.
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge in a recognized Skating Program, including technical competence performing skating skills.
• Experience working with all ages, including pre-school, children, youth, adult, and senior adult participants.
• Knowledge and understanding of policies, procedures, and regulations related to: Rink/Arena facilities; Skating or In-line Skating or Hockey (as appropriate); Health & Safety; Risk Management, Access & Equity.
• Possession of certification in Parks and Recreation Ontario's Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD). This is a mandatory course that will be provided to you at no cost upon obtaining a conditional offer of employment, with course dates and details provided at that time.
• Please note: NCCP accreditation is preferred.

A Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is a mandatory requirement for working with children and vulnerable adults. Once you complete online onboarding documentation, if you reside in the City of Toronto (postal code starts with 'M'), you will be sent an email with a voucher code to complete an online VSC application with Toronto Police at no cost. Applicants residing outside of the City of Toronto will need to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check from their local Police Service at their own cost.
