The Opportunity

The University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position as an Assistant Professor in Law and Philosophy. This unique opportunity is held jointly between the prestigious Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law (51%) and the Department of Philosophy (49%) in the Faculty of Arts & Science. This role is ideal for an outstanding scholar eager to contribute to both fields within a world-renowned academic institution in Toronto, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

This position is being advertised concurrently with an Associate Professor role (req 49534); however, only one appointment will be made. Separate applications are required for consideration for each posting.

We are seeking candidates who demonstrate exceptional promise and achievement in both research and teaching within the intersection of law and philosophy. Your expertise will be critical to enriching the academic environment at the University of Toronto.

  • Hold a JD or equivalent degree.
  • A doctoral degree, earned by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, is preferred.

Evidence of research excellence can be demonstrated through:

  • A record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications that meet high international standards.
  • A compelling submitted research statement outlining current and future interests.
  • Presentations at significant conferences.
  • Awards and accolades.
  • Strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through:

  • Teaching accomplishments and a comprehensive teaching dossier.
  • A teaching statement and sample course materials.
  • Teaching evaluations or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities.
  • Experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor.
  • Experience leading successful workshops or seminars.
  • Student mentorship.
  • Excellent conference presentations or posters.

As an Assistant Professor, you will play a pivotal role in advancing scholarship and education at the University of Toronto. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Pursuing innovative and independent research.
  • Establishing an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
  • Being assigned a teaching and service load within both the Faculty of Law and the Department of Philosophy.
