Key Responsibilities and Technical Expertise
As a Journeyperson Metal Fabricator, your specific duties will encompass a broad range of skilled shop and field work, performed at the journeyperson level. You will be responsible for welding, fitting, brazing, heating, cutting, and laying out tasks while expertly repairing and maintaining City equipment, structures, and buildings. This role demands advanced work in tempering, cutting, straightening, bending, shaping, and drawing out machinery parts and tools, ensuring the longevity and functionality of critical assets. You will perform skilled welding, heating, cutting, and tapping tasks using various materials, including steel, cast iron, and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals, adhering strictly to established trade practices. The position may also involve supervising subordinates performing less complex related tasks, requiring independent judgment for unusual problems related to complex fitting, fabrication, welding, layout, and design. Assignments will be provided through both written and verbal instructions, often accompanied by sketches or blueprints, ensuring precise execution of every service request.
Qualifications and Professional Requirements
To be successful in this Journeyperson Metal Fabricator role, candidates must possess a strong foundation of education and considerable journeyperson experience. This includes completion of Grade 10 supplemented by relevant technical courses. Essential qualifications include a Metal Fabrication Certificate of Qualification (T.Q.), an Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement, or Certification of Apprenticeship, with Red Seal certification being preferred. Applicants must demonstrate thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the steel fabrication trade. This includes expertise in the use and care of tools and equipment for finishing and fitting a variety of metal parts and objects during the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of construction and maintenance equipment. A comprehensive understanding of trade hazards and proper safety precautions is also required. Candidates must be able to weld aluminum, cast iron, and steel, as well as layout and make patterns.
