job description
The Opportunity
Build the future with WSP at the heart of Quebec's mining industry. As an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer specialising in Tailings Management, you will join a team of over 100 specialists dedicated to the design, construction, maintenance, and restoration of mine tailings facilities, adhering to the highest industry standards with a constant focus on environmental protection. This role is based in one of our offices in Montréal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, or Gatineau.
You will participate in large-scale multidisciplinary projects involving geotechnics, hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and environmental considerations, from conceptual studies to field work supervision. Your expertise will contribute to sustainable mining development and help shape Quebec's future, all while working within a team known for its collaboration, mentorship, and strong safety culture.
Responsibilities
You will contribute to the geotechnical design of mine tailings facilities, dykes, waste rock dumps, and other mining infrastructure, proposing robust, safe, and sustainable solutions. This includes participating in the planning and management of geotechnical investigation programmes, encompassing drilling, in-situ testing, and laboratory analyses of varying complexity and scope.
You will perform geotechnical analyses and numerical modelling to optimise the design of mining structures, focusing on stability, performance, and long-term behaviour. Your role involves conducting site visits to mining operations and inspections of tailings facilities, identifying geotechnical risks, and providing practical recommendations for ongoing operations.
Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with internal WSP teams on studies integrating geotechnical, hydrological, hydrogeological, geochemical, and environmental components. You will be responsible for drafting clear, structured, and data-driven technical reports to support client decision-making and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Additionally, you will provide technical assistance to operating mines to optimise their processes, enhance the performance of their structures, and mitigate geotechnical risks. This position also offers the opportunity to mentor junior engineers on both engineering tasks and field activities, fostering knowledge transfer and best practices. You will also contribute to business development, particularly in the Abitibi region, by strengthening client relationships and supporting the preparation of technical proposals.
Requirements
Candidates should hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a relevant discipline, coupled with a strong interest in mining geotechnics. You must be a member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or eligible for membership in the short term.
We are looking for intermediate experience in geotechnics applied to the mining sector, specifically in mine tailings management, embankment dams, or large-scale earthworks. You should be adept at planning and supervising geotechnical investigations, both field and laboratory, and interpreting results to inform design decisions. Proficiency in performing geotechnical analyses and numerical modelling, along with using specialised tools to support recommendations, is essential.
The role requires comfort working in a field mining environment, including site visits and inspections, while rigorously adhering to health and safety requirements. Demonstrated ability to write high-quality technical deliverables, such as reports, calculation notes, and memos, and to communicate complex concepts effectively to clients and partners is crucial. We seek a team player with a strong sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute to sustainable mining development, considering both communities and the environment.
