Role Overview
Halton Healthcare is proud to offer the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) program, a vital initiative for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and those registered in a non-practicing class. This program, developed in collaboration with Ontario Health and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), provides a structured pathway to gain essential nursing practice experience in a supportive environment. As an IEN Learner, you will be partnered with a highly-skilled preceptor at one of our three hospital sites across Halton, including Oakville, Milton, and Georgetown.
This unique opportunity allows you to work in a learner capacity for up to 450 hours, directly applying your nursing knowledge, skill, and judgment under expert supervision. The program is designed to ensure you understand and meet your nursing accountabilities as per CNO Practice Standards and Halton Healthcare's policies. Successful completion of this supervised practice experience can lead to an opportunity to apply for RN or RPN vacancies within Halton Healthcare, making it a crucial step in your healthcare career in Ontario.
Day-to-Day Experience
As an IEN Learner within the SPEP program, your daily activities will focus on hands-on nursing practice and continuous learning. You will work closely with your preceptor, gaining invaluable experience in an in-patient unit. This includes demonstrating your application of nursing knowledge, skill, and judgment in real-world scenarios, ensuring alignment with CNO practice standards and Halton Healthcare's operational procedures.
The program requires a minimum of 140 hours of demonstrated practice, with a maximum of 450 hours, to be completed within six months. You will be available to work various rotating 12-hour shifts, Monday to Sunday, providing comprehensive exposure to the dynamic environment of a busy healthcare setting. Your progress will be evaluated using a CNO-approved tool, with confirmation from both you and your preceptor that all program requirements have been met.
Qualifications
To be eligible for the IEN Learner - SPEP program at Halton Healthcare, candidates must meet specific criteria set by the CNO and the program guidelines. This role is ideal for those seeking to fulfill their practice requirements for CNO registration.
- Must be a non-registered RN or RPN applicant who is an Internationally Educated Nurse, OR must be registered in the non-practicing Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) class.
- Applicants are eligible if they have met all of their registration requirements except for: Evidence of Practice, or Evidence of Practice and Language Proficiency.
- Must provide a SPEP Eligibility letter from the CNO (found in the CNO applicant portal).
- Must practice under the supervision of a nurse in the appropriate category or class of registration.
- Successfully complete the program within 6 months.
- Successfully complete a minimum of 140 hours during which application of nursing knowledge, skill, judgement, and understanding of nursing accountabilities (CNO practice standards) is demonstrated.
- Be available to work in an in-patient unit at any of our three hospital sites: Oakville, Milton, Georgetown.
