job description
About the Role
The Notification Platform team at DoorDash operates within Growth Engineering, playing a pivotal role in connecting consumers, Dashers, and merchants across our global markets. This platform delivers critical transactional notifications that directly impact the order experience, while also driving growth through relevant, personalized marketing communications.
The team's work is structured around four key notification pillars—Reach, Frequency, Liquidity, and Contextualization—divided into a Supply side (focused on expanding reach and content liquidity) and a Demand side (handling decisioning and contextualization). From essential order updates and masked communication to promotional offers, recommendations, and the cross-vertical Notification Hub, this engineering team builds the product and platform systems necessary to deliver the right message to the right audience, on the right channel, at the right time and frequency.
DoorDash is actively seeking an Engineering Manager to lead this dynamic Notification Platform team. This is a highly cross-functional and systems-driven role, sitting at the intersection of marketplace communications, personalization, machine learning, and platform governance. Your primary mission will be to scale a reliable, intelligent notification ecosystem, delivering across push, email, SMS, and the Notification Hub. This system is powered by the Pedregal platform and enriched with ML-driven ranking and Generative AI content. You will partner closely with Product, Operations, Data Scientists, and other engineering teams to define strategy, execution, and long-term technical direction. As a technical leader, you will ensure the team delivers high-impact notification systems that operate reliably at scale, remaining configurable, experiment-friendly, and grounded in real-world user engagement.
Key Duties
In this Engineering Manager role, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact by:
- Building and leading a high-performing engineering team focused on notification delivery, personalization, and platform governance.
- Owning the technical vision and roadmap for the Notification Platform, ensuring alignment of product strategy with Growth Engineering’s broader mission.
- Driving the go-forward Pedregal platform, including centralized capabilities such as deduplication and holistic ranking that coordinate across domains.
- Partnering deeply with Product, Operations, and Data Scientists to integrate ML-driven send-time, frequency, and channel optimization, and to expand Generative AI content generation across channels and domains.
- Delivering real-time, data-driven systems that balance transactional reliability, growth, and unit economics (e.g., SMS cost efficiency) across markets.
- Scaling the platform internationally with shared, configurable infrastructure to support entities such as Wolt and Deliveroo.
- Fostering a culture of ownership, rigour, and experimentation, with high standards for system correctness, scalability, and operational excellence.
Requirements
DoorDash is looking for an experienced leader with a strong technical background to excel in this role. Successful candidates will typically possess the following qualifications:
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field.
- 7+ years of industry experience.
- 2+ years of engineering management experience (team size > 5).
- Proven experience building and scaling backend, platform, or distributed systems.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, especially with cross-functional stakeholders.
- AI/ML experience in personalization, ranking, or Generative AI is a nice to have.
