The successful candidate will join a collaborative group of physicians dedicated to academic success and clinical excellence within a dynamic emergency medicine environment. This role involves delivering exemplary patient-centred care and actively contributing to the academic mission of the University of Toronto.

  • Deliver exemplary, efficient, and patient-centred clinical care within a dynamic emergency medicine environment.
  • Play an active role in supervising and supporting trainees, fostering high-quality bedside teaching and mentorship.
  • Provide real-time medical consultation to in-field paramedic teams through the patch program, contributing to optimal patient care beyond the hospital setting.
  • Engage with the University’s academic mission by contributing to areas such as education, quality improvement, research, and/or administrative initiatives.

This opportunity is with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, in affiliation with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Sunnybrook is a leading tertiary care hospital located in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, renowned for its dynamic and progressive healthcare environment. As Canada’s largest trauma centre and the first hospital in Canada accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Centre, Sunnybrook provides exceptional patient care.

Annually, Sunnybrook manages 1.2 million patient visits, including 64,000 emergency department visits. It serves as a regional referral centre for diverse specialties such as burns, stroke, cancer, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular, spinal surgery, and high-risk maternal/neonatal care. The hospital also functions as the base hospital for Toronto EMS. The Department of Emergency Medicine comprises approximately 45 physicians committed to academic success and clinical excellence, prioritizing group wellness and flexible scheduling. Their interests span pre-hospital care, quality improvement, patient safety, health services research, virtual care, technological innovation, ultrasound, and medical education.

Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and serves as a core training site for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, along with various Postgraduate and Fellowship Programs. Staff are established leaders in medical education, leading the residency program’s POCUS training and offering a high-fidelity, interprofessional, team-based simulation program for teaching and continuing professional development. Compensation and Perks

This full-time clinical academic appointment offers an estimated annual compensation ranging from $300,000 to $400,000. Remuneration is provided through an Alternate Funding Arrangement (AFA) and an Alternate Funding Plan (AFP), reflecting both clinical and academic contributions. The department also prioritizes group wellness and flexible scheduling for its physicians.
