About the Chief Engineer Role

As a Chief Engineer with Atlantic Towing, a division of J.D. Your primary duty will be to ensure that proper engine room watchkeeping arrangements are in place, alongside developing appropriate Standing Orders and Night Orders tailored for the specific type of vessel and its operation. You will ensure that the vessel’s maintenance program is rigorously implemented and maintained in accordance with applicable regulations, manufacturer specifications, company policies, and good engineering practices, with all relevant records properly maintained.

This vital position involves continuously monitoring the performance, maintenance, and repair of all marine machinery and electrical equipment. This includes critical components such as Main Engines and Auxiliary Machinery, Steering Gear, Thrusters, Oily Water Separator, Sewage Treatment Plant, Pumps, Valves, Piping, Refrigeration Machinery, and Deck machinery like winches, cranes, davits, capstans, and windlasses. You will also monitor the vessel’s structure for hull and bulkhead integrity, corrosion, and leaks. The Chief Engineer will oversee the survey status of the vessel’s machinery, maintaining a current file of class machinery survey reports, and distribute work assignments, supervision, training, and performance appraisals for engine room personnel. A key aspect of this role is the supervision of any work of a hazardous nature, ensuring that all safety procedures, such as Safe Work Permits and Lockout/Tag Out, are strictly followed.
