As an Assistant Professor within the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, you will be instrumental in advancing cutting-edge research and contributing to academic excellence. This tenure-stream position, part of the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program, is designed to attract internationally based Early Career Researchers to Canada, providing significant research funding and institutional support.

Your core responsibilities will include:

• Mounting an innovative, competitive, and independently funded research program that is transformational, translational, and garners partners.
• Undertaking undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities within the Electrical and Computer Engineering department.
• Conducting research that demonstrably aligns with Canada’s strategic priority areas, including Advanced digital technologies (AI, quantum, cybersecurity) and Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic.
• Focusing research in the general area of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with an emphasis on AI for Science and AI for Engineering, including all engineering areas in electrical and computer engineering.
• Exploring expertise in AI for good, including the responsible use of AI to solve meaningful human or societal problems, such as those in ecology and sustainability.

What you'll bring

The University of Toronto is seeking exceptional emerging scholars who possess a strong foundation in their field and a clear vision for impactful research and teaching. Candidates must be within five years (minus eligible delays) of the start date of their first research-related appointment, defined as an appointment where the individual has the autonomy to conduct research independently.

Key qualifications and requirements for this Assistant Professor role include:

• A Ph.D in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• A demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
• Established an independent program of research, with potential for impact through collaborations and to generate translation and impacts.
• Evidence of research excellence of an internationally competitive calibre, commensurate with career stage, as demonstrated by a record of contributions or publications in leading journals, a high-level research pipeline, presentations at significant conferences, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels through a teaching dossier, including a teaching statement highlighting previous experience such as leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, delivering conference presentations or posters, or experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor.
• Professional or lived experiences that enhance the ability to teach a diverse student body are highly valued.

Compensation and perks

The University of Toronto offers a competitive compensation package for this tenure-stream Assistant Professor position. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, with the upper end of the salary range for this position exceeding $200,000 CAD per annum. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

As an Emerging Leader, you will receive substantial research funding and institutional supports. Awards are valued at $100K per year over six years, with the possibility of extension for another six years, providing a robust foundation for your transformative research.
