The University Health Network (UHN) is seeking a Senior Analytics Specialist to provide advanced analytical leadership for its critical Surgical Planning initiatives. Based at Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, ON, this permanent full-time position is central to optimising cross-site functional planning for the renowned Sprott Department of Surgery. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant health system improvements within one of Canada's leading academic health sciences centres.

As a Senior Analytics Specialist, you will be instrumental in developing sophisticated scenario-based planning tools. Your work will involve translating complex clinical and operational data into actionable recommendations that directly support long-term, enterprise-wide surgical resource planning. This position demands a senior-level analyst capable of independently structuring intricate problems, integrating diverse data sources, building robust models, and clearly communicating assumptions to drive strategic decisions aligned with patient access, system demand, population health needs, and UHN Surgery's strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

The Senior Analytics Specialist will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of surgical care at UHN through a range of key responsibilities, including:

• Lead the design and development of scenario-based analytical tools that quantify operational, staffing, and capacity impacts of procedural activity growth across UHN Surgery, integrating data from surgical activity, waitlists, OR utilization, case costing, clinical operations, and supporting service areas.
• Assess upstream and downstream impacts of growth scenarios on supporting partners, including Pre-Operative Clinics, MDR, JDMI, Labs, Environmental Services, inpatient wards, and other relevant services.
• Compare scenario outputs against UHN Surgery strategic priorities, system demand, population health needs, market trends, government priorities, resource constraints, and funding considerations to identify feasible growth options.
• Develop evidence-based recommendations for surgical growth, resource allocation, OR and procedural planning, staffing models, and sustainable activity planning, including projected impacts on surgical waitlist volumes, wait times, and patients beyond target thresholds.
• Engage clinical programs and operational leaders to validate current and future demand, clinical requirements, planning assumptions, feasibility, and risks associated with proposed scenarios.
• Prepare executive-ready reports, briefing materials, and presentations that communicate complex analysis, assumptions, methodology, data quality considerations, sensitivity testing, risks, and recommendations in clear plain language, while documenting methods for transparency and knowledge transfer.

Skills and experience

To excel in this Senior Analytics Specialist role, candidates must possess a strong academic foundation in a relevant discipline. An undergraduate degree in Health Informatics, Public Health, Computer Science, Business, Health Administration, Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field is required. A Master's degree in a related area will be considered a valuable asset.

Candidates should demonstrate a minimum of 3–5 years of progressive experience in healthcare analytics, decision support, operational planning, performance reporting, modelling, or similar analytical roles, preferably within a hospital or health system environment. Key skills and experience include:

• Demonstrated experience independently leading complex analyses from problem definition through data acquisition, modelling, interpretation, stakeholder validation, and recommendation development.
• Advanced experience developing visualizations, analytical models, scenario tools, routine reports, and ad-hoc analyses using multiple clinical, operational, and/or financial datasets.
• Advanced technical proficiency with SQL or Excel is required.
• Experience with Power BI, Python, R, MS Azure, simulation, or optimization tools is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of surgical systems, OR activity, access and waitlist management, patient flow, capacity planning, staffing, case costing, and funding considerations is considered an asset.
• Strong analytical judgement, systems thinking, problem-solving, communication, stakeholder engagement, and organizational skills, with the ability to synthesize ambiguous information, identify patterns and risks, translate complex technical information for clinical, operational, and executive audiences, influence without direct authority, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
