About Metrolinx and the Opportunity
Metrolinx connects communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, operating GO Transit, UP Express, and the PRESTO fare payment system. The agency is building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to enhance transportation for residents. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are central to Metrolinx’s values of serving with passion, thinking forward, and playing as a team.
The Senior Advisor, Capital Communications will report to the Senior Manager, Capital Communications. This role involves collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to drive strategic communications for the Capital Projects Group’s subway program. You will lead the planning, development, and delivery of impactful communications materials, support media relations, manage issues and emerging risks, and act as a key liaison for stakeholders. This is an in-office position based at the 97 Front Street office location in Toronto, where the team benefits from in-person collaboration, relationship-building, and hands-on partnership.
Key Responsibilities
You will lead the planning and execution of comprehensive communications strategies and associated tactics, including plans, media Q&As, press releases, newsletters, website content, social media, and event materials. As a relationship manager and key contact, you will formulate and implement strategic communications with diverse internal and external stakeholders, such as political figures, the public, media, government, contractors, and employees, while anticipating communications risks and opportunities. You will also work closely with the community engagement team to develop clear, timely local communications that keep residents informed about ongoing construction activities in their communities.
Further responsibilities include developing responses for media calls and social media comments as they arise. You will anticipate critical issues and trends, developing comprehensive issues strategies in partnership with project team members to ensure a strong process to identify, prioritise, manage, and minimise issues. This role also involves monitoring, identifying, and responding to shifting stakeholder and public expectations that may impact the organisation and transit initiatives. You will develop strong relationships with project delivery teams and contractors, managing and overseeing contract deliverables, including the execution of long and short-term communications initiatives.
What You'll Bring
The ideal candidate will have completed a degree in communications, public relations, or a related discipline, or possess an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, such as government transportation and policy analysis. Demonstrated training and experience in communications, public affairs, or journalism is essential. Familiarity and experience working with the diverse communities that make up the region are also important.
We are looking for someone who pursues innovation and utilises strong analytic skills and knowledge of strategic communications planning and execution. Excellent project and time management skills are required to coordinate multiple complex projects effectively. You should have the ability to understand, use, and communicate highly technical information to lay audiences. Independent thinking and the ability to work autonomously to undertake proactive communications activities in support of major projects are also key. Exceptional writing and negotiation skills are necessary to gather information, write key messages, news releases, and other content, and to develop presentations, speaking notes, submissions, and correspondence.
