Responsibilities of a Recreation Therapy Assistant
As a Recreation Therapy Assistant at University Health Network (UHN), you will play an active role in the conceptualization, execution, and assessment of a diverse range of recreation programs and services. You will collaborate closely with our dedicated team to help design and develop engaging activities that cater to the unique preferences and needs of our clients, directly contributing to their therapy and well-being.
- Partner with the Recreation Therapist in the design of therapeutic recreation programs.
- Implement recreation participation programs tailored to meet patient interests.
- Contribute to the recreation therapy intervention plan and actively report significant observed changes to the Recreation Therapy team and appropriate stakeholders.
- Participate as a member of interprofessional team(s) within the healthcare setting.
- Provide supervision to volunteers, high school co-op students, and college placement students as requested.
- Maintain Recreation Therapy records such as GRASP, MDS, recreation statistics, program descriptions, and evaluations in a timely and accurate manner.
- Be responsible for ongoing informal evaluation of recreation programs.
- Consider program requirements including facilities, budget, equipment, and supplies; purchase and maintain supplies as necessary.
- Prepare posters, employee expense forms, equipment set up requests, and the Recreation Therapy calendar; book entertainment, complete patient meal forms and Stores order forms as required.
- Participate in the orientation/mentorship of new staff and colleagues as required.
- Identify continuous learning opportunities that support skill and knowledge development related to the position.
- Engage in evidence-informed, person-centred practices as they relate to recreation therapy.
- Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians, and visitors, including compliance with hospital safety standards and applicable legislation, identification and prevention of safety issues, taking corrective action where possible, and attendance at safety meetings/training/updates.

We are seeking a dedicated individual with a strong commitment to patient care and a passion for recreation therapy. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes, demonstrating a history of good performance and attendance.
- College diploma in Recreation Leadership, Recreation Therapy, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 1 – 2 years of recreation/activation experience with the adult population.
- Proven experience in the delivery of recreation programs.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and within an interprofessional team in a healthcare environment.
- Effective collaborative and team-oriented skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to be creative and resourceful in program development.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Evidence of satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
