As a Trades 3 Mechanic, you will join the Fleet Management Department, a vital team that offers a complete range of services for all automotive and equipment assets at the University.

The University of British Columbia Vancouver campus operates a diverse fleet of more than 500 vehicles and equipment. This includes electric vehicles, pickup trucks, cargo/passenger vans, refuse-hauling trucks, construction equipment, backhoes, rugged terrain vehicles, lawnmowers, and agriculture and landscape equipment. Your expertise will ensure that this extensive fleet and all related equipment are safe, operationally efficient, and environmentally sustainable, directly contributing to the smooth functioning of UBC.

Your Impact as a UBC Mechanic

In this essential role, you will perform skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on a wide array of campus vehicles and other mechanical equipment. Your daily contributions will be crucial in keeping UBC's operations running smoothly, from routine inspections to complex overhauls. You will also play a key role in ensuring all vehicles and equipment meet provincial inspection program requirements and recognized standards.

• Overhaul engines and transmissions; demonstrate a strong understanding of electrical and electronic systems; perform electrical and electronic diagnosis; conduct fault finding, rebuild parts for reuse; modify engine parts for specific purposes; and weld (using electrical and acetylene welding) and repair equipment.
• Lubricate trucks, tractors, and equipment.
• Maintain all vehicles and equipment up to recognized standards.
• Utilize experience in maintaining and servicing EV, Hybrid, and CNG vehicles.
• Keep current with preventive maintenance concepts using Planon and other related systems, and be familiar with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.
• Inspect and maintain vehicles to meet Provincial Vehicle Inspection Program requirements.
• Maintain gardening equipment, such as power lawnmowers, fertilizers, spreaders, chainsaws, etc.
• Maintain and test stationary emergency generators.
• Fabricate, upfit, and modify vehicles utilizing sheet metal facilities.
• Train and monitor the work of one or more apprentices.
• Instruct drivers and operators in proper vehicle and equipment use and maintenance.
• Maintain mechanical tools and equipment used for mechanical repairs.
• Maintain an inventory of repair parts, order parts, and prepare repair/maintenance estimates.
• Respond to Trouble Calls and Emergency Call-Outs, some of which may involve mobile repairs.
• Carry out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled mechanic who is ready to contribute to the operational excellence of UBC's extensive fleet. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background, a commitment to safety, and an understanding of diverse vehicle and equipment types. Your ability to identify problems, determine repair requirements, and execute work efficiently will be key to your success in this role.

• A trade certification to a journeyperson level as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Automotive Mechanic.
• Computerized engine management training.
• Technical certification as an authorized Commercial/Private Vehicle Inspector.
• Valid BC Drivers class 3 license with air brakes endorsement.
• Clean driver’s abstract and insurance claim history.
• Minimum five years of related experience.
