Your Impact

As a skilled Mechanic at UBC, you will play a crucial role within the Facilities’ Fleet Management Department, ensuring the university's extensive fleet and equipment are safe, operationally efficient, and environmentally sustainable. Your expertise in repair and maintenance will directly contribute to creating an outstanding learning environment across the UBC Vancouver campus.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Overhauling engines and transmissions; demonstrating a strong understanding of electrical and electronic systems; performing electrical and electronic diagnosis; conducting fault finding, rebuilding parts for reuse; modifying engine parts for specific purposes; and welding (using electrical and acetylene welding) and repairing equipment.
• Maintaining all vehicles and equipment up to recognized standards.
• Being responsible for vehicle inspection.
• Maintaining and servicing EV, Hybrid, and CNG vehicles.
• Keeping current with preventive maintenance concepts using Planon and other related systems, and being familiar with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.
• Inspecting and maintaining vehicles to meet Provincial Vehicle Inspection Program requirements.
• Maintaining gardening equipment, such as power lawnmowers, fertilizers, spreaders, chainsaws, etc.
• Maintaining and testing stationary emergency generators.
• Fabricating, upfitting, and modifying vehicles utilizing sheet metal facilities.
• Training and monitoring the work of one or more apprentices.
• Instructing drivers and operators in proper vehicle and equipment use and maintenance.
• Maintaining mechanical tools and equipment used for mechanical repairs.
• Maintaining an inventory of repair parts, ordering parts, and providing repair/maintenance estimates.
• Responding to Trouble Calls and Emergency Call-Outs, some of which may involve mobile repairs.
• Carrying out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

What You'll Bring

To excel in this Mechanic role, you will bring a robust set of technical skills and certifications, coupled with a commitment to safety and operational excellence. Your ability to perform advanced maintenance and repair on a diverse range of vehicles and equipment will be key.

Minimum qualifications include:

• A trade certification to a journeyperson level as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Automotive Mechanic.
• Computerized engine management training.
• Technical certification as an authorized Commercial/Private Vehicle Inspector.
• Valid BC Drivers class 3 license with air brakes endorsement.
• Clean driver’s abstract and insurance claim history.
• A minimum five years of related experience.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Ability to perform advanced maintenance and repair on job-related tools, equipment, and machinery.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Knowledge about the Workday system will be an asset.
• Ability to bring own tools.
• Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.
• Ability to communicate in a clear, attentive, and polite manner.
• Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

You will be an integral part of the Fleet Management Department within UBC Facilities, reporting directly to the Manager, Fleet & Asset.
