Who We're Looking For
We are seeking dedicated individuals with a strong work ethic and a commitment to public service. Successful candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
- Up to completion of high school.
- Labouring and semi-skilled experience with small hand tools.
- Driving experience and knowledge of the City of Vancouver roadways.
- Experience operating small pick-up trucks, mid to large size trucks, sweepers, flushers, garbage trucks and/or experience operating a Class 3 vehicle or higher preferred.
To be considered for this role, candidates must attach specific ICBC documents and satisfy the City’s driving requirements. The selection process will involve screening based on your application, resume, ICBC documents, and potentially an interview and supervisor assessment.
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting.
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting.
- If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
As an Operations Worker II in Street Cleaning, you will be part of a night shift team, working a compressed work week of four 10-hour shifts (8:30pm – 7:00am) including weekends. Your day will involve driving City vehicles and performing manual labour to ensure the cleanliness of Vancouver. Specific duties include:
- Perform manual cleaning with a rake, shovel, and leaf blower on assigned maps/beats.
- Tip/empty litter receptacles on streets and in parks on assigned maps/beats.
- Clear lanes of abandoned debris on assigned maps/beats.
- Special events preparation and clean up across the city as assigned.
- Drivers will dump waste material at the Vancouver Transfer Station or designated compactors, or dump zones as needed/directed.
- Respond to weather specific events that cause risk to public safety or assets in the event of such things as flooding, snow, ice, and storms.
- Document completed work such as pre/post trip vehicle inspections in compliance with Branch policies.
- Accurately record the results of investigations or work completed in the field in response to Service Requests from 311.
- Maintain cleanliness of equipment and vehicles.
- Proper use and storage of equipment and tools.
- Qualified and trained employees are eligible to operate rear-load Garbage Trucks, Sweepers, and Flusher equipment at the higher rate specific to the work for the job classification.
- Other duties as assigned.
The following shifts are currently available, with others potentially offered based on operational needs: Thursday through Sunday, Friday through Monday, or Saturday through Tuesday, all from 8:30pm to 7:00am the following day. Your availability must meet Branch expectations to continue employment.
Compensation and Perks
This temporary full-time position offers a competitive wage of $35.25 per hour, corresponding to Pay Grade GR-310.
