Role Overview

Join the University Health Network (UHN) as an integral member of the Neurophysiology Department at Toronto Western Hospital. This overnight Video-EEG Monitoring Technician role is based in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, focusing on continuous patient monitoring. Your expertise in EEG monitoring will be crucial for identifying seizure events and ensuring patient safety throughout your shift.

Responsibilities

As an EEG Monitoring Technician, your primary responsibilities will revolve around vigilant patient observation and timely intervention within the hospital setting. Key duties include:

  • Utilizing knowledge of patient safety and seizure identification to monitor up to 10 patients simultaneously.
  • Alerting Nursing staff to seizures and active safety events, as per established standards.
  • Operating, troubleshooting, and ensuring EEG equipment is performing in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Preparing written hand-off reports required to document all seizure events for shift change and technologist review.
  • Participating in teaching, training, and other educational activities.
  • Performing minimal patient care responsibilities to facilitate the provision of optimal patient care.
  • Observing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Performing cross-functional responsibilities as assigned and/or required.

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking a dedicated professional with a strong understanding of neurophysiology and patient monitoring. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills, which are required for success in this demanding yet rewarding role:

  • Completion of a community college diploma program or equivalent, at minimum.
  • Digital EEG and Video EEG monitoring experience or Polysomnography experience required.
  • Epilepsy monitoring unit experience is an asset.
  • Must understand/know electrical safety standards.
  • Able to visually identify potential seizure events on EEG/Video is an asset.
  • Required to multitask, e.g., flagging seizure activity on one patient whilst still monitoring 9 others.
  • Strong decision-making skills to identify which cases warrant RN or MD intervention.
