The University of Alberta, a leading institution in Edmonton, Alberta, is seeking a dedicated part-time Contract Lecturer for its Media and Technology Studies department. This unique opportunity involves teaching one section of MST 100: Introduction to Media Studies during the Fall 2026 term. This role is crucial for supporting international students transitioning into university study in Canada through the University of Alberta’s Foundations Program.

As a Contract Lecturer, you will introduce students to the dynamic field of Media Studies, exploring its historical development, principal objects of study, and contributions to understanding culture. The course examines historical and contemporary media forms, introducing foundational approaches to analysing media technologies, institutions, texts, and practices. A key aspect of this teaching role is creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from diverse cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds. You will provide clear guidance and structured support as students develop essential foundational skills in critical reading, academic writing, classroom discussion, and media analysis, preparing them for broader university studies.

Key duties

• Preparing and delivering course instruction for MST 100: Introduction to Media Studies.
• Developing or adapting the syllabus, readings, assignments, and assessments.
• Providing timely feedback to students.
• Holding appropriate office hours.
• Completing grading and other course-related administrative duties.
• Supporting students as they transition to the expectations of Canadian university study.

Requirements

To be successful in this teaching role at the University of Alberta, candidates must meet specific academic and experiential criteria.

• Hold a master’s degree or PhD, completed or in progress, in Media Studies, Communication, Cultural Studies, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of media history, theory, and analysis.
• Possess university-level teaching experience or other relevant instructional experience.
• Exhibit the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and communicate course expectations effectively.
• Show a commitment to inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive teaching.

Experience teaching international students, multilingual learners, or students transitioning into university study is strongly preferred. Additionally, experience incorporating discussion, audiovisual materials, and applied or creative activities into undergraduate teaching would be considered a valuable asset.
