job description
About the Role
As a Bakery Decorator at Calgary Co-op, you will contribute to a culture that values pride, ownership, mutual respect, and community care within a collaborative team environment. This role is crucial for ensuring excellent customer service and maintaining efficient, safe bakery operations, while adhering to all company policies and standards. You will report directly to the Bakery Supervisor or Manager and may provide direction and supervision to Bakery Utility Clerks in their absence.
Your key responsibilities will include providing exceptional customer service and fostering positive customer relations by effectively handling inquiries, comments, requests, and complaints, while working proficiently and amicably within a diverse team. You will perform all aspects of bakery decorating functions, including stocking, creating appealing displays, and facing products efficiently and in an organised manner, ensuring display presentation and stock levels are consistently maintained. This also involves handling merchandise to ensure quality, minimise damages and markdowns, provide substitutions, and uphold price integrity through accurate price changes. Furthermore, you will be responsible for general cleanup duties, such as cleaning spills and display fixtures, keeping the sales floor and back stock areas free from cardboard and debris, and managing garbage disposal. Adherence to Occupational Health & Safety, Food Safety, and Environmental regulations and policies is paramount to ensure the well-being of both staff and customers. You will also ensure the proper care, use, and maintenance of equipment and tools, reporting any repair requirements to the Bakery or Duty Manager.
Beyond decorating, your duties extend to ordering merchandise and supplies, managing all aspects of receiving—including reviewing and verifying invoices, handling returns, transfers, and claims, and ensuring proper product storage. You will also be responsible for organising and conducting inventory. In the absence of a Supervisor or Manager, you will provide direction within the Bakery, ensuring daily staff functions are carried out efficiently, health and safety rules are followed, providing verbal input on employee performance and conduct, offering technical training (such as department orientation and commodity-specific functions with day-to-day instruction and feedback), applying effective customer service techniques, and authorising appropriate documents for shift replacements. You will finish, inspect, prepare, and decorate all baked goods, cutting and slicing products as required, and contribute to the development of new products, creating designs, and fulfilling special orders.
What You'll Bring
To be considered for this position, you will need a Grade 12 education or an acceptable combination of education and experience, along with a blend of bakery and decorating training and experience. Successful candidates must also pass an in-house Bakery Decorator testing. Additionally, you will be required to successfully complete and maintain Foodwise #14 certification within one year of employment, as well as any necessary Occupational Health and Safety courses. Candidates who bring supervisory experience or have completed a S.A.I.T. or Wilton Decorating course, or possess equivalent experience, will be highly regarded.
