The Opportunity

The University of Toronto invites applications for a distinguished Associate Professor in Law and Philosophy. This is a full-time, tenure-stream position, jointly held between the Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law (51%) and the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Science (49%). This unique academic role offers an exceptional scholar the chance to contribute to both legal and philosophical discourse within Canada's leading university environment in Toronto.

The anticipated start date for this pivotal faculty role is July 1, 2027. Please note that this position is being advertised concurrently with an Assistant Professor – Law and Philosophy position (Req ID 48761); however, only one appointment will ultimately be made from these two postings. Separate applications are required for consideration for each role.

Qualifications

We are seeking outstanding scholars with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in both research and teaching, coupled with an established international reputation in Law and Philosophy. The ideal candidate will possess the academic credentials and a proven track record to thrive in this demanding, interdisciplinary environment at the University of Toronto.

  • Candidates must hold a JD or equivalent degree.
  • A doctoral degree, earned by the time of the appointment or shortly thereafter, is preferred.
  • Evidence of research excellence, demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals.
  • A compelling submitted research statement outlining current and future research interests.
  • Presentations at significant conferences.
  • Awards and accolades.
  • Other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
  • Strong endorsements from referees.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, a comprehensive teaching dossier (including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations), and strong letters of reference.
