About the Role

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, an academic teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is seeking a permanent Hematological Pathologist. This role involves an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor within the Faculty of Medicine, specifically in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.

The successful candidate will join the Division of Hematological Pathology, part of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics (LMMD), Precision Diagnostics and Therapeutics Program. This position is vital for fostering excellence in hematological pathology and education within the hospital and the broader academic community in Toronto.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Complex Malignant Hematology referral centre and expert hematopathology hub for North Toronto, this role involves significant clinical responsibilities. The successful candidate will join a roster of laboratory medicine specialists, contributing to comprehensive patient diagnostics and care.

  • Conducting bone marrow evaluations, incorporating clinical context, flow cytometry, and genomic information.
  • Demonstrating competency in coagulation testing.
  • Expertise in hemoglobinopathies.
  • Proficiency in core and special laboratory hematology.

Opportunities may be facilitated for training in molecular sign out, as well as engagement in laboratory management and advocacy initiatives at local, provincial, and national levels. Community outreach, including travel to partner institutions within the Greater Toronto Area, may also be required.

Teaching is a core component of this academic position. The successful candidate will be expected to teach residents, fellows, and medical students within a fully accredited Hematological Pathology residency program. Members of the Division of Hematological Pathology at Sunnybrook actively participate in teaching, applied research, and quality improvement activities, enjoying dynamic interactions with other divisions of the Department, including diagnostic and molecular pathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, and biochemistry. Those with interests in translational research are encouraged to connect with collaborators in the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

Qualifications

Applicants must be eligible for an academic appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, with the rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. English is the primary language of work.

  • Hold a medical degree.
  • Possess a relevant Hematological Pathology Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent.
  • Be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Ontario.

Candidates with Anatomic Pathology/Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology or General Pathology/Diagnostic and Clinical Pathology credentials will be expected to have completed a certified hematopathology fellowship or demonstrate equivalent experience. A graduate degree (e.g., MSc, MBA, PhD) will be acknowledged. Additional clinical expertise in lymphoma pathology and/or transfusion medicine/cell therapy services are considered assets but are optional.
