About the Role
MiWay is actively seeking experienced and motivated leaders to oversee the daily maintenance operations for its transit buses and non-revenue fleet vehicles. Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Transit Maintenance, this Supervisor role is crucial for leading skilled trades staff within a unionised, safety-critical environment. The primary objective is to ensure all vehicles are safe, fully compliant, and consistently ready for service.
This position plays a significant part in supporting daily service delivery, optimising fleet availability, and upholding MiWay’s strong commitment to safety, reliability, and exceptional customer service. Guided by a forward-thinking strategic plan, MiWay’s vision is to be a transit system that instils pride in Mississauga by delivering a safe, reliable, and efficient transit experience, built upon robust traditions of safety, service, and courtesy.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will supervise the day-to-day activities of Transit Maintenance staff, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely inspection, repair, cleaning, and servicing of all transit buses and non-revenue fleet vehicles. This includes assigning work, allocating personnel and equipment, and adjusting priorities to support daily fleet availability and service requirements effectively. You will be responsible for scheduling maintenance activities and preparing work orders using a computerised maintenance management system. A key duty is ensuring all maintenance work strictly complies with Ministry of Transportation legislation, applicable safety regulations, manufacturer specifications, and MiWay’s policies and procedures.
This role involves providing front-line leadership by setting clear performance expectations, monitoring work quality, and offering support to staff through coaching and constructive feedback. You will manage staffing requirements, attendance, overtime, and shift coverage in accordance with operational needs and collective agreements. Working collaboratively with management, Human Resources, and union representatives is essential to address employee relations matters and foster effective labour relations. Responding promptly to service-impacting failures, road calls, incidents, and urgent maintenance issues is also required.
Further responsibilities include ensuring staff are properly instructed in safe work practices, approved methods, procedures, and performance standards. You will support the onboarding, orientation, and ongoing development of MiWay Maintenance staff. This position also supports, and when required, supervises the operation of the bus wash area, fuelling stations, and bus cleaning activities. Monitoring and managing records, including absences, overtime, incident reports, and operational data, is integral to the role. You will assist with identifying warranty issues, tagging defective components, and ensuring warranty claims and supplier commitments are upheld. Ensuring tools, parts, materials, and cores are properly handled, stored, returned, or disposed of in accordance with procedures is also expected. The Supervisor will conduct technical investigations, inspections, and procedural or quality audits as needed. Finally, you will promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace free from harassment and discrimination, supporting MiWay’s commitments under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC), the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and related corporate policies.
