As a Senior Risk Manager, Trading Market Risk within Capital Markets Risk Management, you will play a crucial role in managing market risk and providing essential risk oversight, with a primary focus on Global Equities trading desks. This position involves deep engagement with trading strategies and proactive market monitoring to anticipate potential risk impacts for CIBC.

  • Understand desk trading and hedge strategies.
  • Provide effective risk challenges to the trading desk.
  • Conduct daily and periodical position/risk monitoring.
  • Explain PnL/risk/Capital changes and risk drivers.
  • Proactively monitor markets to anticipate potential risk impact.

You will collaborate closely with the Director, Trading Market Risk, and other risk managers to deliver timely and accurate risk and product analysis to senior management. This includes providing leadership in risk measurement enhancement projects, such as internal risk measurement and FRTB Capital risk measures for your business line. You will partner with Capital Markets Risk, Capital Markets (Traders), Technology, and Finance to ensure sound risk management and measurement, efficient communication, and process enhancements. Furthermore, you will work with Quantitative Risk Management to identify model issues and continuously enhance existing models, utilizing your quantitative, database, and coding skills to streamline risk oversight processes and perform ad-hoc risk analysis.

CIBC supports a flexible work environment. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring you to be on-site 2-3 days per week, with other days working remotely.

Skills and Experience

To succeed in this Senior Risk Manager role, you will demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to continuous professional development in capital markets. Your expertise will be vital in managing CIBC’s exposure to market risk factors.

  • Ensure effective and timely communication of desk PnL and risk change explanations, closely monitoring trading activities and limit utilization.
  • Provide effective challenges to respective trading desks’ business strategies and risk management practices, proactively identifying key market risk factors/indicators.
  • Develop excellent relationships across Capital Markets groups, maintaining clear and concise lines of communication as a second line of defence.

We are looking for a professional who embodies CIBC’s values and possesses the following qualifications and attributes:

  • 3+ years of experience in market risk, trading, or a related risk field, with strong knowledge of capital market products, especially Equity Derivatives or other asset class derivatives.
  • A degree or diploma in Quantitative Finance, Financial Engineering, Financial Mathematics, Statistics, or a related program.
  • Digitally savvy with programming and database skills (Python, R, SQL, Bloomberg API, etc.) and a vision to streamline/automate oversight processes and ad-hoc risk analysis.
