Key requirements include over 10 years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in senior leadership, and proven expertise in enterprise-scale communication platforms, Node.js, and marketing technology.

Leading Communication Engineering at Scotiabank

Join Scotiabank as a Senior Manager, Engineering and play a pivotal role in advancing the bank's industry leadership in payments technology and innovation. This position is central to delivering modern communication and campaign orchestration capabilities across the entire enterprise. You will oversee two critical platforms within Scotiabank’s Communication Domain, ensuring they provide enriched information and transparency to support the rapidly evolving payments community. Your leadership will drive the technology strategy, execution, and delivery for these essential platforms, focusing on resilience, scalability, cost optimization, and compliance. This role offers a unique opportunity to partner closely with product, marketing, and enterprise technology teams to shape the technical roadmap and deliver impactful solutions that enhance customer engagement and trust within Scotiabank.

The core of this role involves managing the Enterprise Journey & Orchestration Platform, an in-house, cloud-native platform built on Node.js. This platform is responsible for orchestrating messages, offers, and campaigns across multiple channels, including mobile banking, web banking, ABM, and branch systems. It serves as the central decisioning and orchestration layer, enabling personalized and contextual customer interactions. Additionally, you will oversee Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO), a strategic enterprise marketing and messaging platform used to deliver email, SMS, and mobile app push notifications for both marketing and transactional messaging use cases. AJO facilitates journey-based engagement by integrating with various downstream channels and internal platforms, making it a crucial component of Scotiabank's customer communication strategy.

Driving Innovation in Customer Engagement

As a Senior Manager, Engineering, your responsibilities will encompass leading and mentoring a dedicated team of engineers, delivery leads, and business analysts who are responsible for both the in-house communication platform and Adobe Journey Optimizer. You will be instrumental in driving the evolution of a cloud-native, API-first orchestration platform, ensuring it supports real-time and batch-based customer journeys and offers effectively. A key aspect of your role will be owning the technical integration between Adobe Journey Optimizer and various downstream delivery channels, guaranteeing reliable and secure message execution across Scotiabank's vast network.

Furthermore, you will oversee critical platform modernization initiatives, which include architecture evolution, performance optimization, scalability enhancements, and ensuring operational resilience. Championing engineering best practices such as CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability, and secure-by-design development will be a core part of your contribution. You will ensure that all platforms meet stringent high availability, performance, security, and compliance standards, while also managing cost and platform efficiency. Collaborating with marketing, digital, compliance, and other enterprise teams is essential to enable consistent, auditable, and compliant customer communications. This role also involves leading vendor and platform governance for Adobe solutions, including roadmap alignment, upgrades, and feature adoption, all while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and technical excellence within the engineering organization at Scotiabank.

Skills and Experience for Success

To excel in this Senior Manager, Engineering role at Scotiabank, candidates should bring over 10 years of progressive software engineering experience, including at least 3 years in senior leadership positions. Proven experience in designing, building, and operating enterprise-scale communication, messaging, or campaign platforms is essential. A strong understanding of modern architecture patterns, such as microservices, APIs, event-driven systems, and cloud-native design, is also required. Hands-on experience with Node.js-based platforms, integration architectures, and message orchestration solutions will be critical for success in managing Scotiabank's key platforms.

Candidates should also possess experience working with marketing technology platforms, specifically Adobe Journey Optimizer or similar journey orchestration tools. A solid understanding of the nuances between transactional versus marketing messaging, customer journeys, and personalization at scale is highly valued. Demonstrated ability to lead teams effectively in agile, DevOps-driven environments while consistently delivering outcomes aligned to business objectives is paramount. Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to partner effectively across marketing, digital channels, compliance, and enterprise technology teams, are also crucial.
