job description

About the Role

Midland Transport is seeking an experienced and results-driven Driver Trainer to support the assessment, onboarding, and development of professional drivers across linehaul, transport pick-up and delivery (P&D), and courier operations. This role ensures all new drivers meet company safety, compliance, and performance standards through road evaluations, drug testing coordination, and structured onboarding programs. This position is based in Brampton, Ontario and reports to the Manager, Driver Development & Training.

Why Join Us

Joining Midland Transport offers a dynamic, safe, and rewarding work environment. Employees benefit from a flexible health, drug, dental, and vision plan, along with an RRSP matching program. The company also provides Employee & Family Assistance Programs and Health & Wellness reimbursements, which include gym memberships, fitness classes, or online workout programs. New parents can take advantage of a maternity leave top-up program, and all employees receive three weeks' paid vacation. There are also growth and progression opportunities within Midland Transport and the larger network of J.D. Irving group of companies.

Key Responsibilities

As a Driver Trainer, you will conduct comprehensive road tests for Class 1, Class 3, and Class 5 driver candidates across various operations, evaluating competency in vehicle handling, defensive driving, safety compliance, and operational procedures. You will coordinate and/or administer pre-employment drug and alcohol testing in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements in Canada and the United States, providing clear pass/fail recommendations and detailed assessment feedback. Your role includes leading new driver orientation sessions, ensuring consistent delivery of company policies, safety standards, and operational expectations, and facilitating onboarding programs that reinforce company values and safe driving behaviours. You will also ensure all required documentation and certifications are completed prior to dispatch.

Additionally, you will provide on-road and in-classroom coaching to improve safety, performance, and efficiency, reinforce best practices, and conduct structured 30-60-90-day check-ins with newly hired drivers. Identifying early performance or engagement concerns and escalating them as appropriate, supporting driver integration, and promoting long-term retention are also key. You will collaborate closely with the Talent Acquisition team to support hiring needs and recruitment initiatives, including job fairs and driver outreach.

What You'll Bring

Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience as a professional driver, with Class 1 preferred, in a fast-paced transportation business. A demonstrated safe driving record and strong knowledge of transportation regulations are essential. Experience in driver training, coaching, and/or mentoring is strongly preferred. A strong understanding of linehaul, transport, P&D, and/or courier operations is required, along with knowledge of hours of service, safety compliance, and industry best practices. Excellent observational and evaluation capabilities, clear professional communication skills both verbal and written, and sound judgment and decision-making, particularly in safety-related matters, are necessary. The ability to build relationships across Operations, Safety, and HR is also important.

This role involves a combination of classroom, yard, and on-road environments, with regular travel between terminals potentially required and a flexible schedule to support hiring and operational needs.
