The Opportunity
Join CIBC's Data Governance team within CAO and GTDAI, where you'll play a pivotal role in strengthening how the bank manages, protects, and utilizes its data. As a Director, Data Governance, you will lead strategic initiatives that advance our data governance framework, support enterprise priorities, and help ensure data is managed with consistency, quality, and accountability across all operations. This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a relationship-oriented bank that values your strengths and ambitions.
You'll work closely with data owners, data stewards, data custodians, and various business and technology partners across CAO and GTDAI to guide governance practices, support policy and control implementation, and drive alignment across teams. In this leadership position, you'll oversee delivery planning, reporting, risk and issue management, and continuous improvement initiatives that foster a robust governance environment. You'll also lead a dedicated team, building capability and providing direction to translate strategic goals into practical execution and measurable outcomes. CIBC supports a hybrid work arrangement, allowing you the flexibility to manage your work activities with 1-3 days per week on-site in Toronto.
Responsibilities
- Drive data governance priorities across the portfolio, ensuring initiatives align with business objectives, regulatory expectations, and enterprise data practices.
- Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of data governance policies, standards, controls, and procedures that support effective data management across CAO and GTDAI.
- Monitor timelines, deliverables, risks, issues, resources, and budgets to support effective execution of governance-related programs and projects.
- Collaborate with data owners, data stewards, data custodians, senior leaders, and business and technology teams to support decision-making, resolve dependencies, and advance shared outcomes.
- Oversee governance reporting, dashboards, and portfolio metrics to provide clear visibility into progress, priorities, and operational effectiveness.
- Direct, coach, and develop a team while setting clear expectations, fostering collaboration, and creating an inclusive environment where people can do their best work.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you'll bring a combination of leadership experience, technical knowledge, and strategic thinking, enabling you to guide complex data governance initiatives effectively.
- Demonstrate 5+ years of experience as a leader in data governance, data management, project delivery, or a related leadership role, ideally within a complex enterprise environment.
- Possess strong technical knowledge and understanding of data governance and data management tools such as Microsoft Purview, Collibra, Databricks, Informatica, or similar platforms, and how they support governance, metadata, and data quality practices.
- Experience developing and implementing strategic team goals, coaching employees, and inspiring successful team performance.
You are a caring and accountable leader who can connect day-to-day execution to broader business goals and guide initiatives that improve governance maturity, operational effectiveness, and risk management. As a collaborative communicator, you build strong relationships across business and technology teams and can clearly communicate priorities, recommendations, and progress to senior stakeholders. You bring your real self to work, living CIBC's values of trust, teamwork, and accountability.
- It’s an asset if you have certification such as Data Management Capability Assessment Model (DCAM) or Data Management Association (DAMA).
