About the Opportunity
This is an in-person role located primarily at the University of Alberta's North Campus in Edmonton. The initial appointment for this position is one year plus one day from the date of hire. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Strategic Infrastructure Planner to join our team, focusing on optimising space and facilities within our dynamic educational institution. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing long-range capital plans, master planning initiatives, and creative scenarios that align our physical assets directly with the university's strategic mission. Reporting to the Head, Strategic Infrastructure Planning, you will contribute to shaping campus infrastructure and supporting the university's core mission of teaching, research, and student success. Internal candidates and former employees of the University of Alberta will be given priority consideration for this competition.
Key Responsibilities
You will collaborate with team members to develop strategic infrastructure plans, including the Capital Plan, Long Range Development Plan, and University Master Plans. A key aspect of this role involves creating domino plan scenarios for the optimal use of buildings and physical assets, aligning them with the university's strategic goals. You will assist in feasibility studies, business cases, and phasing plans for both existing and new facilities and land projects. The role also requires you to develop, prioritise, and operationalise plans in alignment with the university's strategic direction and organisational priorities. You will manage the workflow of long-range planning activities, ensuring flexibility and effectiveness in land use, academic planning, and capital project needs. Support will be provided to various university offices and departments in integrating strategic documents into their planning processes, including the Capital Plan, Campus Plan, Long Range Development Plan, and maintenance renewal planning. You will proactively engage with peer experts within the Department of Integrated Planning, Development and Partnerships and other campus partners to provide insights for key planning initiatives, space policies, and procedures. This includes implementing the updated Space Management Policy, related Space Standards, the Space Management Overview manual, and Utilisation Guidelines for all 18 categories of space, totalling 1.5 million square metres. You will continuously assess and enhance space utilisation, functionality, quality, and access to amenities. The role also involves contributing to operational and budgetary planning for common or shared spaces, including guideline and policy development. You will contribute to and lead visioning and planning for key initiatives, working with consulting resources and stakeholders. Utilising space data and evidence-based modelling will be crucial for determining best-use scenarios for asset planning. Finally, you will implement and analyse space performance benchmarks, adopting industry best practices across Canada and North America, and update space metrics and factors aligned with strategic goals and adaptable to various circumstances and user needs.
What You'll Bring
A Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Interior Design, Business Administration, or a related field is required, with a Master’s degree preferred. Professional accreditation in Urban Planning or Interior Design is considered a valuable asset. You will bring a minimum of five years of progressive experience in strategic space and facility planning, long-range master planning, and space policy development. Proven ability to draft space policies, standards, and guidelines, ideally within a post-secondary institutional framework, is essential. Demonstrated experience incorporating smart growth and sustainable development principles into large-scale planning initiatives is also required. Experience hiring, directing, and overseeing external consultants and vendors is important for this role. You should be proficient in writing strategic master planning proposals and utilising strong analytical skills to define clear decision-making criteria. The ability to effectively visualise and translate complex planning recommendations through various media formats is also key. Exceptional leadership skills are necessary, with a proven track record of facilitating visioning sessions, stakeholder engagements, and high-stakes meetings. You will possess masterful written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create and deliver high-quality presentations to diverse audiences. Strong negotiation, consensus-building, and conflict-resolution capabilities are highly valued. We are looking for a proactive, solution-focused, and courageous professional who is forward-thinking, curious, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
Compensation and Workplace
