Key Responsibilities and Technical Expertise

In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring well, pad, and field performance by utilizing real-time data and trends, ensuring alignment with SAGD operating envelopes such as subcool, steam targets, flow rates, and well integrity. A core aspect of your contribution will be to provide daily surveillance and optimization recommendations, directly supporting safe, reliable, and efficient production. You will coordinate daily with Production and Reservoir Engineers, Field Operations, Plant Operations, Maintenance & Reliability, Automation, and Completions teams to prioritize critical work and manage well start-ups and production activities based on current field and operating constraints.

Furthermore, the Site Production Technologist will gather and communicate key operating inputs, including speed-ups, cut lists, start-up plans, NCG targets, steam targets, and LOTO requirements, to support Pads Production, Integrated Operations, and Control Room teams. Troubleshooting and optimizing ESP performance, supporting failure response, and coordinating replacement design and execution with ESP specialists and Completions teams are also crucial duties. You will coordinate contractor visits for subsurface-related work, ensuring alignment with scheduling, training, permitting, and site requirements. Identifying and supporting continuous improvement initiatives, automation, new technology implementation, and compliance with the Operational Excellence Management System are integral to this challenging and rewarding position at Suncor.

Qualifications and Work Environment

To qualify for this Site Production Technologist position, candidates must possess a diploma in technology from an accredited technologist institute, complemented by 8-12 years of related work experience. Ideally, applicants will be eligible for registration with ASET, preferably as a C.E.T or P. Tech. Industry experience in oil and gas, particularly direct experience in In Situ SAGD operations, is considered a significant asset. A strong understanding of production engineering, reservoir engineering principles, and production optimization practices is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate working knowledge of subsurface software and data tools such as WellView, PI, Seeq, and Power BI. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are vital for effective collaboration across technical and operational teams. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, proactive, highly organized, and possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

This position operates on a Fly-in/Fly-out (FIFO) schedule to the Firebag office, with flights provided from Calgary, Edmonton, or Saskatoon. The hours of work involve 12-hour day shifts.
