job description
About the Role
This Research Associate position at the University of Alberta's Department of Physiology is based in-person on North Campus, Edmonton. The initial appointment for this role is 8 months. The Leslie lab focuses on understanding the involvement of membrane transporter proteins and conjugating enzymes in detoxification, with a major emphasis on the biotransformation and transport of the environmental human carcinogen arsenic.
Key Responsibilities
The Research Associate will oversee the day-to-day functioning of the laboratory. Key responsibilities include designing complex experiments, reviewing scientific literature, and contributing to the writing of papers and grants. You will also train other lab members in various techniques such as mammalian cell culture (transient and stable transfections, long-term cultures), biochemical and molecular techniques (e.g., western blots, immunostaining, protein assays, agarose gels, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis), microbiology (bacterial cultures for plasmid isolation), and radioactive transport assays. A specific area of investigation involves understanding how the dietary trace element selenium influences arsenic hepatic and erythrocyte transport pathways.
What You'll Bring
Candidates should possess an MSc with strong experience in lab management; a PhD is preferred. Extensive experience is required in mammalian cell culture (including stable cell lines and long-term cultures), radioactive use, molecular biology, biochemical techniques, and membrane proteins. Experience with primary hepatocytes and hepatic cell lines would be considered an asset. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal skills, are essential. Experience working with undergraduate and graduate students in a research laboratory setting is also required.
Compensation
This position offers a salary range of $47,599 to $59,504. Please note that this position is not eligible for benefits.
