We are seeking a dedicated Plant Operator to join our Albian Plant Operations Team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This role is crucial for ensuring that production, quality, and environmental targets are consistently met. The Plant Operator will interact and coordinate closely with a team of operators and maintenance staff, contributing significantly to the reliability and safe operations of our facility. This is a safety-sensitive position with a 7x7, 12-hour shift schedule, reporting to the Shift Team Lead. The role involves working within a dynamic production environment and overseeing day-to-day plant activities to maintain and optimise equipment and processes for optimal performance.
As a Plant Operator, you will utilise your extensive operations expertise within a dynamic production environment to maintain and optimise critical equipment and processes. A paramount responsibility is ensuring Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) integrity, completing all work with a safety-conscious attitude. This includes issuing Safe Work Permits for complex operating scenarios, such as hot work, confined spaces, and excavation. You will be responsible for the safe isolation of process equipment, developing specific Lock Out Tag Outs (LOTO’s), and verifying isolations. Performing operating assignments on various plant equipment is essential to maintaining a consistently safe working environment. Your role also involves applying Canadian Natural’s stringent safety and operational procedures and standards, troubleshooting equipment issues, and performing area maintenance and housekeeping activities. Identifying and driving continuous improvement opportunities to maximise production and reduce operating costs is expected, along with collaborating on preventative maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operations. Furthermore, you will proficiently use the maintenance management system to enter work orders, monitor facility readings, perform proactive equipment rounds, and support the development of facility procedures, ensuring all systems are functioning optimally. Accurate shift documentation, including operating logs and safety and environmental reports, is also a key accountability for all unit operations.
Candidates for this Plant Operator position must bring a minimum of five years of operational experience gained within a large integrated industrial utilities facility. A 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate is essential, with a strong preference given to those holding a 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate or a 3rd Class Certificate with multiple 2nd Class papers written. Expertise in various control and distribution systems is highly valued, including DCS Controls Systems, Raw Water and Distribution Systems, Recycle Water and Distribution Systems, and Condensate Collection Systems. Experience with Gas Turbines and Auxiliaries, Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG’s), Boilers and Steam Distribution Systems, Heat Exchangers, Instrument and Utility Air Systems, and Power Distribution will be a significant asset. The ability to accurately read P&IDs and PFDs is also required, along with a valid Class 5 Driver’s License. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced team environment with a continuous improvement mindset. Previous experience commissioning new plant facilities is also considered an asset. This role requires the physical ability to work in an outside environment, at heights, climbing ladders, and operate in and around confined spaces.
