The Project Engineer will be accountable for achieving safety, environmental, scope, cost, and schedule objectives, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. A major aspect of this role involves developing comprehensive execution plans, capital budgets, cost estimates, schedules, risk registers, and resource plans to ensure successful project delivery and stage gate approvals. The role requires working collaboratively with internal stakeholders to finalize project scoping documents and charters, ensuring designs are reviewed and incorporate feedback for high-quality, fit-for-purpose outcomes. Furthermore, the Project Engineer will oversee engineering service providers, equipment vendors, fabricators, and construction contractors daily. Managing these projects in accordance with Canadian Natural’s Project Management Methodology, while monitoring progress and addressing issues, is critical for successful delivery and closeout. This requires strong organisational skills and a proven track record of managing complex projects.
Candidates for this Project Engineer position must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and maintain APEGA P.Eng. registration in good standing. A minimum of 10 years of relevant oil and gas experience is required, specifically including project management, process design, and significant thermal (SAGD and/or CSS) facility experience. The ability to execute projects across the full lifecycle, demonstrating strong familiarity with large-scale project delivery, is essential. Front-end project development, economic evaluation, and field experience, particularly managing medium to large projects, are considered strong assets. Effective communication, coupled with strong organizational, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, alongside a strong work ethic, are vital for success in this demanding role. The successful candidate will leverage a strong understanding of thermal heavy oil economics to drive project success.
