Reporting to the Manager, Legal - Business Operations, this Legal Counsel will be instrumental in providing timely and effective legal support across multiple facets of our enterprise. A core responsibility involves offering comprehensive legal support and analysis to Canadian Natural’s Joint Ventures, Mineral Land, Regulatory & Stakeholder Relations, and other commercial teams, ensuring alignment with established company practices and objectives. The role demands the ability to identify, assess, and clearly communicate complex legal and commercial risks to internal stakeholders, thereby facilitating effective decision-making processes. Furthermore, the Legal Counsel will skillfully review, analyse, interpret, and draft a wide range of contracts and critical legal documents. This position also involves actively supporting commercial teams in partner and counterparty negotiations, particularly in the resolution of commercial disputes and the structuring of joint venture arrangements. Advising and supporting Regulatory & Stakeholder Relations teams on compliance matters, including interpreting regulations and directives, preparing applications for permits and approvals, and responding to regulatory appeals, forms another key aspect of this challenging role.
The ideal candidate for this Legal Counsel position will possess a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree and maintain active membership in the Law Society of Alberta. Bringing at least seven years of relevant legal practice, preferably with a robust focus on Energy and/or Oil & Gas Regulatory matters, is essential. This experience should encompass drafting, reviewing, and interpreting a broad range of legal agreements and documents, alongside a proven track record of interpreting regulations and effectively navigating regulatory processes and compliance requirements with various regulatory agencies. Strong interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills are paramount, as is the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within cross-functional teams. The successful individual will demonstrate sound legal judgment and keen business acumen, capable of understanding and supporting both short- and long-term business objectives within the demanding natural resources environment. A strong work ethic and the consistent delivery of high-quality work within deadlines are expected.
