About the Opportunity
The University of British Columbia (UBC), in affiliation with the BC Centre for Disease Control and the Digital & Sexual Health Initiative, is seeking a Peer Research Assistant. This hourly position, averaging 14 hours per week, is crucial for supporting the Digital Determinants of Health (DDoH) study. The study aims to understand how the shift to digital services impacts access to health and social support, particularly for populations facing barriers related to sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections (STBBIs). This is a hybrid role, requiring some onsite work at the Soonats’ooneh Community Health Centre in Prince George, British Columbia. The compensation for this role ranges from $26.67 to $31.73 CAD hourly, with an anticipated end date of December 31, 2026.
Key Responsibilities
The Peer Research Assistant will actively assist with study promotion in collaboration with the Soonats’ooneh Community Health Centre and the research team. Core research activities include recruiting participants, obtaining informed consent, conducting interviews, and reviewing and cleaning interview transcripts. You will also contribute to analysing data and interpreting findings. This role requires completing TCPS-2 training and other relevant training, maintaining and updating research records according to ethical and confidentiality standards, and assisting with the administration of research participation honoraria payments. Attending research team meetings and assisting with other duties as needed are also part of this dynamic role.
What You'll Bring
Candidates should possess high school graduation, some additional training in a related field, and a minimum of two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including those in conflict with one’s own, is essential. You must also demonstrate a commitment to enhancing your own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from members of populations facing barriers in accessing STBBI-related services. Preferred qualifications include a passion for addressing health inequities, an interest in developing qualitative health research skills, and the ability to work respectfully with community agencies and diverse community members. Excellent communication skills, the ability to exercise tact, discretion, and safeguard confidentiality are highly valued. Comfort creating a welcoming environment for open conversations about sexual health, substance use, and bodies is important, as is proficiency with MS Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive) and videoconferencing applications (MS Teams, Zoom). The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is key, and access to reliable internet is preferred. Prior experience with research is considered an asset.
