The City of Saskatoon is seeking a dedicated Parks Supervisor to join its Community Services Division for an approximate 12-month term. This vital role supports and promotes the health and safety of employees while meticulously planning, supervising, and coordinating the staff and equipment essential for urban forestry operations within Saskatoon's extensive parks system. The successful candidate will play a crucial part in maintaining the beauty and functionality of the city's green spaces, ensuring that all activities adhere to the highest standards of safety and operational excellence. As a Parks Supervisor, you will be instrumental in fostering a safe and positive workplace culture, consistently promoting the health and safety of all staff in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations and the City of Saskatoon's policies. Your ability to supervise and participate in all phases of arboriculture and horticulture will be required, alongside assisting with budget preparation and acting as a liaison for technical advice. A core aspect of this role involves ensuring subordinate staff receive comprehensive training in all urban forestry operations, inspecting contractor work, and operating various types of self-propelled and hand-operated power equipment as needed. You will also be responsible for monitoring staff attendance, authorizing payroll, and conducting annual performance evaluations, maintaining detailed records of staff, equipment, and other work-related issues to report to management. Facilitating general maintenance operations and administrative responsibilities is also required, contributing significantly to the smooth functioning of the Parks Department.
Candidates for this Parks Supervisor role must possess a Grade 12 education, complemented by a diploma in horticulture, with core courses specifically in Arboriculture and/or Urban Forestry. Five years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in urban forestry and horticulture are required to excel in this demanding position. Applicants must hold a current Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence, along with a current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record. The ability to successfully complete a recognized supervisory program within two years of hire is also expected. Essential knowledge includes arboriculture and horticultural practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in parks maintenance. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is crucial, as is the ability to operate parks, forestry, and maintenance equipment. The successful candidate will also show a strong ability to supervise, train, develop, and evaluate staff, alongside the ability to plan, assign, schedule, and coordinate operations. Proficiency in computer software, including word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications like Microsoft Office, is also required for effective administration within the City of Saskatoon.
