Sun Life Canada is seeking an experienced Insurance Review Manager to join our team in Waterloo, Ontario. This hybrid role requires two days per week in the office, offering flexibility while fostering collaboration. You will play a crucial part in advancing and enhancing our Insurance Review Program, building strong relationships with third-party distribution partners and advisors. Reporting to the Director, Insurance Oversight Programs, you will assist with the ongoing management and maintenance of the Program for Sun Life Canada. This position offers a significant opportunity to grow your leadership, compliance, and testing expertise within the financial services and insurance sector.
In this role, you will plan and conduct audits of Managing General Agents (MGAs) and National Accounts, alongside auditing advisors in our third-party distribution channel. You will complete risk-based Advisor Desk Reviews and develop annual compliance audit plans and schedules. Your responsibilities include performing planning, scoping, and sampling activities, then executing steps to evaluate compliance with insurance rules and regulations. You will review and assess key compliance processes and controls of distribution firms, executing thorough testing, documenting, assessing, and reporting the results. Identifying, communicating, and escalating issues appropriately will be vital, ensuring corrective action plans adequately address risk and are completed on time. You will write clear and concise compliance testing reports and other documents summarising levels of risk, findings, and recommendations, while tracking issue remediation. Continuous assessment of the Insurance Review Program for trends and opportunities for improvement in risk management, programme effectiveness, and technical enhancements is also a key duty. Finally, you will perform ongoing market conduct or on-site assessment reviews and maintain effective working relationships with compliance representatives and line management, often managing several projects concurrently.
To succeed in this position, an undergraduate degree in a related field is required. You should have a minimum of five to seven years of experience in regulatory compliance, operational or business controls testing, or internal auditing within the financial services or insurance sector. Experience executing audits of insurance advisors is considered an asset. You must be knowledgeable in insurance regulatory requirements and Canadian Life & Health Industry Association (CLHIA) Guidelines, with excellent knowledge of risks, controls, and testing methodology. A working knowledge of MGA and National Account firm audit procedures, planning, and test or sampling methods is also essential. The ability to gather and analyse facts to prepare and present concise findings in a partnering manner is crucial. A recognised professional accounting designation such as CPA/CA, CIA, CPA/CMA, or CPA/CGA is an asset. You should be able to translate legislation and regulations into business impacts, compliance elements, and regulatory risks, and possess knowledge of regulatory requirements and securities laws applicable to financial institutions. Experience in data analytics is also an asset. Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills are preferred, alongside the ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities and timelines in a dynamic environment. Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are highly valued, as is the ability to prioritise responsibilities and complete deliverables in a deadline-focused setting.
