The City of Ottawa's Public Works Department, specifically Traffic Services, is seeking an Electronic Control Systems Technologist. You will be part of a team responsible for the entire lifecycle of traffic control equipment, from assembly to ongoing support.

As an Electronic Control Systems Technologist, you will play a key part in ensuring public safety and optimizing transportation networks across Ontario's capital. Your expertise will be crucial in the assembly, installation, testing, and maintenance of various traffic control, communications, video, and related equipment, directly impacting the daily lives of residents and commuters in Ottawa.

Responsibilities

In this role, your responsibilities will include a broad range of tasks essential for maintaining and enhancing the city's traffic infrastructure:

• Assembly, installation, testing, and maintenance of Traffic Control, Communications, Video, and related equipment.
• Traffic Signal assembly, installation, modification, and maintenance.
• Traffic Control Room management of data and video equipment and data communications.
• Signal Timing engineering.
• Camera assembly, installation, modification, and maintenance.
• Re-lamping management.

What You'll Bring

To succeed as an Electronic Control Systems Technologist with the City of Ottawa, you will need a strong foundation in electronic technology, combined with practical experience and specific certifications. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of traffic control systems and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues effectively.

• Completion of 3-year college diploma in Electronic Technology.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in a field relevant to the skill-set.

• Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with OACETT.
• Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Field Technician Level II certification within the timeframe determined by the employer.
• Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated.
• Must complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g. WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer.

• Microprocessors, their application and use in both process control and embedded applications.
• Personal computer software for office applications, communications, and testing.
• Programming languages, such as C++, at a level adequate for debugging and basic I/O routines.
• Process control technologies, application, and use.
• Communication techniques and technologies, and their application and implementation.
• Traffic control methods and traffic engineering concepts, i.e. progression, phasing, levels of service, interval timing.
• Fibre-optic analog and digital data transmission, theory, and application.
• CCTV (surveillance video) transmission methods, PTZ remote control of cameras, theory, and application.
• Fundamentals of electrical transmission, distribution, and circuit protection.
• Electrical principals and the problems involved in A.C./logic interfaces.
• Diagnostic methods, tools, and technologies and their use in the electronic traffic controller environment.
• Working knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies/procedures related to health and safety.
• UPS systems and Solar technologies.
• WHMIS.
• Ontario Highway Traffic Act Book 7.
• Lockout and Tagout procedures.

• Ability to maintain and repair equipment with limited access to supervisory consultation.
• Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and diagnose technically complex problems and traffic control device design needs, and design and develop creative solutions.
• Ability to interpret engineering plans and drawings, and develop work orders and technical design plans accordingly.
• Possession of effective judgement and decision-making skills and abilities that affect public safety and costs.
• Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision.
• Ability to collaborate and contribute to projects.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
