About the Role
This is a project-based, one-year plus one-day term position at the University of Alberta, located in Edmonton, AB. The role offers a hybrid work model, combining remote work with in-person presence at the North Campus.
Reporting to the Director, Community & International Education within the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, the eLearning Specialist is primarily responsible for designing and developing effective online learning tools and courses. This position plays a crucial role in promoting and integrating online learning tools, instructional technology, and courses across the Faculty's various programmes, collaborating with over 20 instructors and staff members.
The specialist will also contribute to designing specific courses, micro-credentials, and professional development initiatives as directed by the Director of ICE.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with subject matter experts to transform existing course content into engaging and interactive online courses for both credit and non-credit programmes. Facilitate the transition of face-to-face course delivery to online or blended formats, incorporating interactive learning objectives, periodic formative feedback, and appropriate evaluative tools.
Ensure all online courses maintain content accuracy, adhere to sound pedagogical principles, and provide effective assessment methods. Advise and support faculty and staff in evaluating and implementing various online teaching tools and academic technologies. Coach individual faculty members and instructors on best practices for integrating eLearning technology within the Faculty.
Design suitable instructional strategies that effectively address faculty and student needs and learning objectives. Establish success measures to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of all training and development programmes, providing recommendations for continuous improvement.
Work alongside faculty members to develop online learning modules using various course authoring platforms, offering consultation, training, and ensuring content meets accessibility standards, university brand guidelines, and user feedback.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent in instructional design, educational technology, training and development, teaching and learning in higher education, or a related field. This must be combined with relevant training and experience in professional development and eLearning applications or other online collaboration tools.
A minimum of two years' experience in technology-enhanced educational environments is required. Demonstrated competency in developing instructional materials in various online formats, including written content and video, along with proven experience in creating online learning courses, is essential.
Applicants should have knowledge of educational multimedia design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite or similar software for audio, video, and image production. Strong project management, prioritisation, multitasking, and organisational skills are necessary, coupled with a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to make timely decisions and act independently.
The role requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Candidates should have knowledge of current best practices in instructional design, curriculum development, and standards such as IMS, SCORM, and accessibility guidelines.
Work experience in post-secondary education is preferred. Knowledge and demonstrated ability in Adobe Creative Suite, audio and video editing, and mark-up languages like HTML and CSS are also preferred. Familiarity and proven ability with learning development tools such as Articulate, Camtasia, Captivate, Presenter, Adobe Connect, E-portfolios, Moodle, eClass, Canvas, Google Suite, and student response systems are highly desirable. Knowledge and demonstrated ability in mobile learning assessment technologies would be an asset.
