About the Role
Sun Life is seeking an energetic, client-centric, and sales-driven Business Development Partner to join its district team in Scarborough, Ontario. This role is crucial for making a positive difference for Canadians and financial advisors. The primary purpose of this position is to recruit, onboard, train, develop, and coach new advisors during their initial four years. You will play a vital part in helping these advisors establish and grow a holistic financial services practice, encompassing life and health insurance alongside wealth products. Reporting to the District Manager, you will collaborate with the district and regional teams to contribute significantly to the overall district’s business results.
Key Responsibilities
As a Business Development Partner, you will actively source candidates for the Sun Life advisor role through community contacts, referrals, and centres of influence. You will provide comprehensive support to candidates, ensuring a positive onboarding experience that includes assistance with licence studies, market identification, business planning, and joint client appointments. Your role involves training and onboarding new advisors, overseeing the successful implementation of their onboarding plan, and conducting training in product knowledge and sales processes, along with providing pre- and post-sales support. You will develop advisor skills and capabilities through focused coaching in areas such as prospecting, building a holistic business practice, assessing cross-selling opportunities, managing the sales cycle, and general business management. You will work closely with advisors to help them achieve their financial and strategic objectives, including sales growth, productivity, and client engagement. This position also requires partnering with various Head Office Centre of Excellence teams to support advisors, monitoring and tracking advisor activities, and analysing data to derive business insights. You will oversee measures to ensure compliant operations, ensuring assigned advisors are appropriately trained, licenced, registered, and adhere to defined product suitability reviews to comply with regulatory and Sun Life obligations. Additionally, you will escalate client complaints, including assessment and advisor investigations, and ensure advisor conduct aligns with their Advisor Agreement. A key aspect of your role is achieving recruiting and production metrics. You will also foster a positive culture and relationships within the district through events, recognition programmes, and meeting participation, alongside building Sun Life’s and local advisors’ community presence through events, activities, and sponsorships.
Qualifications & Skills
To succeed in this role, you must possess strong business acumen, comprehensive product knowledge in insurance and wealth, and a thorough understanding of the market, competition, and industry. Strong sales management, business development, prospecting, and recruitment skills are essential. You will demonstrate robust mentoring, coaching, performance management, and influencing abilities. Effective problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills are required, coupled with strong communication capabilities, including presentation, written, and verbal skills, and excellent relationship-building proficiency. You should be able to support advisors in defining and accessing their target market and have previous experience leading sales teams. Candidates must be forward-thinking, goal-oriented, with a clear focus on achieving targets, and possess a strong working knowledge of the regulatory environment. The ability to manage a successful performance management process within a sales culture is crucial, as is a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development. Educational and experience requirements include a minimum of two years of related experience within the financial services industry. You must hold a valid Life Insurance Agent’s licence in the province where this role is located and either hold a valid Mutual Fund licence or obtain one within the first 90 days. Furthermore, you must complete the Branch Manager’s Course Examination and satisfy the experience required to become registered as a mutual Fund Branch Manager with the appropriate provincial securities commission within your first six months. Being in good standing with applicable regulators is also mandatory. Proficiency with various technologies, including Salesforce.com, financial planning software, and Microsoft applications, is expected. Professional designation(s) in financial services, previous experience in an advisor role, and previous people leadership experience are considered valuable assets.
