Key Duties

The Sprinkler & Fire Protection Installer performs a wide range of responsibilities to ensure the continuous operation and compliance of all fire and life safety equipment and systems throughout Toronto. Your expertise will be crucial in maintaining various fire protection systems, including sprinkler systems, across diverse municipal facilities.

• Performs maintenance, modifications, inspections, replacement (including internal inspections), and repairs of wet, dry, pre-action and deluge sprinkler systems, fire pumps, fire hoses, standpipe systems, clean agents, private hydrants, and other fire and life safety equipment and infrastructure.
• Ensures all work is performed in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code across diverse indoor and outdoor environments, such as high-rise office buildings, day cares, shelters, long-term care facilities, industrial facilities, parks, pools, yards, and utility facilities (including water and wastewater facilities).
• Conducts component replacement on fire sprinkler systems, standpipe risers, clean agent systems and other fire protection systems as required.
• Performs hydrostatic testing on sprinkler and standpipe fire department connections.
• Provides expert input on the repair and modification of fire protection systems (e.g. fire alarm, sprinkler systems and clean agent), leveraging hands-on experience to recommend practical and effective design adjustments when needed, to ensure compliance with Ontario Fire Code requirements, as enforced by Toronto Fire.
• Coordinates and directs external contractors to address emergency repairs, major system failures and modifications to fire protection systems, including recommending scope of work and recommending outside vendors when needed.
• Inspects completed repairs by fire protection contractors, ensuring it is fully completed, meets all applicable codes and adheres to established safety and quality standards.
• Identifies and reports deficiencies and code violations during inspection, testing and maintenance activities and provides recommendations for corrective action.
• Coordinates repairs between contractors, building occupants and tenants to rectify hazards. Inspects completed work and completes inspection reports.
• Documents inspection results, identifies deficiencies and initiates escalation through formal reporting processes. Coordinates additional resources for larger sites as required to complete inspections.
• Prepares and maintains reports and inspection records inclusive of corrective actions, as required, on fire and life safety equipment and systems.
• Travels to various properties to access equipment located throughout buildings and sites, which may involve entering confined spaces and works in mechanical, electrical and service rooms.
• Notifies building operations staff, building tenants/occupants and Toronto Fire Communications when shutdown of fire protection systems is required to facilitate repairs and/or replacement.
• Arranges for repairs and/or alterations of the systems in conjunction with Fire Technicians and Supervisors.
• Utilizes Building Reports Canada in conjunction with the work order management system or other approved centralized inspection program to conduct scheduled inspections and track deficiencies.
• Provides fire protection system operating instructions and information to building maintenance staff, communicating system status, functionality and any adverse conditions, ensuring staff are informed about system operations.
• Carries tools, materials and equipment to and from job sites.
• Reviews and interprets blueprints and technical drawings.

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking a highly skilled and certified professional with a strong background in fire protection systems. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of various sprinkler systems and related fire safety infrastructure, coupled with the ability to interpret technical documentation and ensure strict adherence to safety codes and standards, particularly the Ontario Fire Code.

• Completion of secondary school combined with craft training and experience equivalent to a minimum four-year apprenticeship program.
• Possession of a valid 427A Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer Certificate of Qualification (Red Seal), or equivalent, recognized across Canada, including successful completion of the Certificate of Qualification examination issued by Skilled Trades Ontario.
• Valid Province of Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and ability to obtain and maintain a City Operator’s Permit.
• Requires an understanding and application of concepts, principles, and methods of a complex skilled trade related to fire protection systems and life safety infrastructure.
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge of wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge sprinkler systems; fire pumps; standpipe systems; fire alarm systems; clean agent systems; and private hydrants.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, system designs, inspection protocols, and compliance documentation.
• Working knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, and standards, including the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, NFPA and ULC standards, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Registration as a Technician with the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) is considered an asset.
