Senior Business Analyst, Operational Reporting - Metrolinx, Canada

The Opportunity

Metrolinx is dedicated to connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, operating vital services like GO Transit and UP Express, alongside the PRESTO fare payment system. As an agency of the Government of Ontario, Metrolinx is also expanding rapid transit infrastructure, including GO Expansion and major subway system enhancements, to improve how people travel. The PRESTO system is a globally advanced electronic transit fare payment solution, serving over 5 million customers across 11 transit agencies, processing billions in fares monthly. It continually enhances the customer experience and supports transit agency clients, including the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), with new payment methods like real-time PRESTO Contactless and Mobile Wallet.

The Business Operations team within PRESTO is seeking a Senior Business Analyst, Reporting and Analytics. This role is crucial for delivering and supporting the methodical exploration of an organisation's data, with a strong emphasis on automation, statistical analysis, and the application of data, information, knowledge, LEAN, and wisdom frameworks. This position aims to build capability and enable Metrolinx to make evidence-based decisions, solve tactical problems, and answer strategic questions by capturing, processing, and analysing data to extract key business insights.

Your Impact

• Design and develop reporting tools to support PRESTO’s ability to extract business insights and monitor service performance.
• Create and develop dashboards for various audiences, including executives, product owners, clients, and Operations teams, to facilitate decision-making and solve complex service delivery problems.
• Liaise with clients and vendors to understand their needs and capabilities regarding data mining, analysis, and subsequent reporting and data interpretation.
• Analyse all available data sources to support desired reporting outcomes, adopting concepts around Big Data.
• Integrate reports from diverse origins into meaningful dashboards that are fit for use and purpose.
• Recommend and implement reporting methods, best practices, and frameworks.
• Identify opportunities to embed analytical functionality directly into systems and applications, shifting focus from mere data collection.
• Explore, research, make recommendations, and champion the use of advanced tools such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, demonstrating their value to product owners, clients, and other stakeholders.
• Embrace new ways of knowing by responding to evolving business demand for analytics.
• Liaise with clients and stakeholders at operational, tactical, strategic, and executive levels to elicit requirements, engage in feasibility studies and pilots, and present final outcomes.
• Champion innovative approaches while leveraging advanced tools and challenging traditional methods and processes.
• Identify, develop, manage, and execute analytical projects designed to uncover business opportunities for Payments stakeholders and product owners, subsequently developing actionable business recommendations.
• Make recommendations that promote financial sustainability and support the mandate of operational efficiency.

Qualifications

To succeed in this Senior Business Analyst role, candidates should possess a strong foundation in data analysis, reporting, and business process improvement, coupled with practical experience in a dynamic environment.

• A post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business Process Improvement, or a related discipline – or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Demonstrated experience as a Business Analyst, preferably within the transport or construction industry, and/or the public sector.
• Ability to perform data mining and interpret data by applying various frameworks.
• Experience with computerized quantitative and analytical tools (e.g., data modelling, workflows, and business process analysis) and proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Project, etc.).
• Ability to use a variety of analytics tools, including the design of service management dashboards.
• Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
• Ability to identify continual improvement opportunities and champion their implementation.
• Working knowledge of project management methodologies and their applications with various stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of gathering and documenting report requirements/methodology and processes, including experience with User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
• Working knowledge of process optimisation techniques.
• Ability to elicit information effectively from various stakeholders.
