As an Overnight Freight Associate at Home Depot in Waterloo, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the store is ready for customers each day. This includes packing-out and packing-down merchandise as directed, as well as merchandising new items and promotional products to attract customer attention. Furthermore, this position requires careful organization and management of overheads, including the important task of striping overheads to maintain order and safety. Effective communication with other freight team members is essential to ensure all product is accurately stocked in its proper area. When assigned, freight associates are required to pick orders, meticulously packing them to ensure products are not damaged, and precisely labelling and placing orders into specified holding areas.
While primarily an overnight role, customer service is still a key aspect of the Freight Team Associate position, as required by customer demand. You will be expected to follow Home Depot’s 'Get Model' of customer service, which involves Greeting, Engaging, and Thanking the customer. When necessary, you will ask open-ended questions about a customer’s projects to determine their needs and level of expertise, guiding them to appropriate solutions.
Safety is paramount in this role, especially given the operation of heavy machinery. Associates are responsible for moving freight safely from designated staging areas to overheads, or bringing merchandise down from overheads, utilizing appropriate equipment such as reach trucks, forklifts, and order picker machines. It is critical to ensure customers are able to move through the aisles easily and safely, free from obstructions. Adherence to all Home Depot Safety and Loss Prevention Policies and Procedures is strictly required to protect both associates and customers within the Waterloo store.
This Overnight Freight Associate position in Waterloo operates within a flexible schedule that includes overnight shifts, and may also involve evenings and weekends. The working environment is typical of a warehouse, which can be dusty and noisy. Associates should be aware that passing forklifts emit gas fumes, and frequently open doors can cause drafts and interior temperature changes. Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving items. The ability to climb ladders, up to 12-16 feet, to obtain or stock merchandise from overheads is also required.
Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills. A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum education requirement, and 1 to 2 years of retail or distribution experience is considered an asset. Knowledge of operating reach trucks, forklifts, and order picker machines is also an asset. The pay range for this part-time contract position is between $20.10 and $21.85 per hour, reflecting the important responsibilities and physical nature of the work.
