What you'll do

As a Landfill Gas Maintenance Technician, you will be primarily responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of the landfill gas control system at the Vancouver Landfill. Your work will involve maximizing landfill gas collection and utilisation, ensuring flare station uptime, and minimising environmental risks such as landfill fires, greenhouse gas emissions, and odours. Due care and attention are crucial during data collection to identify problems and implement corrections, ensuring the safety of staff and the public. This position is based out of the Vancouver Landfill in Delta, BC.

  • Conduct monitoring, including data logging, for the well field, manifolds, and flare station/systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of instruments used for monitoring, including Landtec GEM5000 and personal gas monitors.
  • Install, operate, and maintain the landfill gas well field leachate pumping system.
  • Conduct routine field monitoring, including liquid levels, temperature probes (permanent and down well), pipeline inspection camera operation and data interpretation, and equipment inspections.
  • Perform preventative and reactive maintenance on all field equipment related to the landfill gas control system.
  • Analyse, interpret, and present data to other Landfill Gas Maintenance Technicians and landfill management staff, including identification of trends or anomalies and recommendations for follow-on work.
  • Liaise with contractors or other City forces (including Operations, IT, SCADA, Electrical, Survey) and consultants who provide contracting and professional services with respect to the operation of the landfill gas control system.
  • Conduct landfill gas data management and analysis, using specialised data management software.
  • Read, review, and update related safe operating procedures and operating manuals.
  • Conduct presentations and tours of the landfill and/or landfill gas system as needed for staff and members of the public.
  • Participate in standby rotations and respond to callouts to maintain flare station operation after-hours.
  • Backfill for other landfill gas technicians during vacation or absence.
  • Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Who we're looking for

The City of Vancouver is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual for this Landfill Gas Maintenance Technician role. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background, practical experience in landfill operations, and the ability to perform detailed work accurately in challenging outdoor conditions. Your expertise in gas collection, data analysis, and equipment maintenance will be key to success in this role.

  • Completion of a recognised two-year diploma program in Environmental Protection Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Certification in the Solid Waste Association of North America's (SWANA) Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) and LFG Operations courses preferred.
  • Experience working at landfills and/or waste management facilities.
  • A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the City of Vancouver policies.
  • Experience and training in working with explosive gases, surveying (i.e., using GPS and level instruments), and conducting water quality monitoring or vapour monitoring is an asset.
  • Experience using handheld measurement equipment is an asset. Examples of equipment include: Landtec GEM, Landtec SEM5000, or other landfill gas analyser with data logging capability and personal gas monitors.
  • Canada Safety Council UTV/ATV Operators Certificate or equivalent is an asset.
  • Considerable knowledge of gas collection and sampling techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems and reading engineering drawings is an asset.
  • Knowledge of various computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to effectively liaise with operations staff, engineering staff, superintendents, and external third parties.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and to assess data independently in order to make operational changes as needed.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and perform duties with minimal instruction while meeting scheduling requirements.
  • Ability to care for, maintain, operate, calibrate, and simple repair field equipment and apparatus.
  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyse, and interpret data.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and handheld power tools is an asset.
