As the Lab and Workshop Technical Lead on Arc'teryx's Advanced Concepts team, this is a pivotal opportunity to drive breakthrough innovation for mountain athletes. You will be instrumental in leading the operation, evolution, and strategic development of critical technical, scientific, and engineering facilities. This includes overseeing the Workshop, Mountain Athlete Lab, and Materials Lab, ensuring they are equipped to support rapid prototyping, comprehensive testing, and innovative experimentation. The role demands a highly hands-on approach, combining technical leadership with meticulous facility management and direct project support across fabrication, 3D printing, and various testing workflows. Your work will directly enable the creation of advanced solutions for complex performance challenges, bringing the coast mountain experience to the world through cutting-edge product development. The Advanced Concepts team is fueled by curiosity, taking a holistic approach to identifying future needs and tangible solutions across advanced materials, products, technologies, and experiences.
In this dynamic role, you will provide essential technical leadership for the daily operation of the Mountain Athlete Lab, Materials Lab, and Workshop, including the crucial management of all equipment, facilities, and workflows. A primary objective is to ensure that all teams have the necessary tools, environments, and capabilities to deliver breakthrough products consistently. This involves partnering with senior leadership to define strategy and execute plans for creation and testing environments. You will manage lab and workshop equipment from selection and procurement to installation, training, calibration, and ongoing maintenance. Direct project support for Advanced Concepts projects will include fabrication, rapid prototyping, machine operation, and test setup, all designed to enable high-performance solutions for mountain athletes. Furthermore, you will champion creation and testing capabilities by leading workshops, coordinating equipment training, and onboarding new users, ensuring compliance with safety standards and applicable regulatory requirements. Looking ahead, you will collaborate to evolve how products are tested in both mountain and lab environments, including enabling data capture in harsh conditions and developing representative lab environments, continuously improving lab and workshop workflows, scheduling, and maintenance systems. This includes building new capabilities for the fabrication and testing of novel apparel and equipment concepts, maintaining high-performance, well-equipped facilities that empower researchers, designers, and engineers to operate at their best.
The ideal candidate for the Lab and Workshop Technical Lead position will possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering, such as Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics, or a relevant science discipline, complemented by over five years of hands-on experience in a lab or workshop environment, specifically leading technical workflows or environments. A strong understanding of how a sports science or testing lab operates, coupled with experience working effectively with scientists and engineers, is essential. Familiarity with instrumentation and the ability to troubleshoot common athlete science and machine shop equipment are key. Candidates must demonstrate strong hands-on experience with various fabrication tools and processes, including CNC milling, 3D printing, and general mechanical shop equipment. Experience in setting up or supporting prototyping and production facilities is highly valued. Advanced knowledge of research and engineering software, including CAD, machine operation, and data management tools, will be critical for success.
