CIBC is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to play a dual role as both a technical expert and a strategic contributor to their hybrid infrastructure journey. This position combines hands-on engineering of virtualisation and cloud platforms with infrastructure architecture leadership, guiding modernisation initiatives across on-premises co-located data centres and Azure cloud, including Azure VMware Solution (AVS).
The successful candidate will support infrastructure transformation by leveraging automation, improving operational efficiencies, and mentoring team members while aligning infrastructure roadmaps to business objectives. This key role within the Infrastructure Planning & Engineering team focuses on enabling scalable, secure, and efficient service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will develop and maintain the infrastructure roadmap, aligning it with enterprise goals, emerging technologies, and modernisation efforts. You will design and oversee the lifecycle of infrastructure services, including virtualisation, storage, automation platforms, and hybrid cloud, while providing architectural leadership for colocated data centres and Azure, encompassing disaster recovery and service continuity. Collaboration with internal teams such as Application Operations and IT Asset Management is crucial to align infrastructure with business and application needs, and you will evaluate and recommend innovative infrastructure technologies to support long-term business growth and resilience.
Key engineering and operations tasks include leading the implementation and management of the VMware stack across on-premises and Azure VMware Solution (AVS) workloads, including vSphere, vCenter, VxRail, NSX-T, vSAN, Horizon, HCX, and VCF. You will build and support hybrid infrastructure in Azure, with a focus on AVS, native services, and workload optimisation. Responsibilities also extend to managing image lifecycle for Windows and Linux, ensuring hardening, patching, group policy, and compliance adherence. Furthermore, you will engineer and support SQL-based solutions, Exchange, SMTP relay, and various storage and backup solutions like EMC/Dell, Commvault, and Rubrik, alongside maintaining and enhancing disaster recovery and failover strategies for critical workloads.
You will drive infrastructure-as-code practices using tools such as Terraform and Ansible, contributing to a DevOps culture within the infrastructure team, including CI/CD integration and process automation. Enhancing visibility and proactive management through observability tools like Dynatrace, VMware Aria Operations, Log Insight, and Network Insight is also a key aspect of this position. Additionally, you will provide mentorship to intermediate and senior infrastructure engineers, act as a technical advisor to senior leadership, ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory standards, and maintain detailed documentation including roadmaps, runbooks, and architectural standards.
What You'll Bring
You bring over 10 years of experience in infrastructure architecture and engineering, encompassing both hybrid cloud and on-premises data centres. Your expertise spans VMware technologies, including vSphere, VCF, VxRail, NSX-T, and Horizon, as well as Azure and Azure VMware Solution (AVS) environments. You have proven experience with infrastructure automation using tools like Terraform and Ansible, alongside image management and compliance. Hands-on experience managing colocation data centres, including disaster recovery planning and performance optimisation, is essential. Familiarity with SQL, Linux, Windows Server, and email infrastructure is also required, coupled with an understanding of enterprise monitoring and analytics tools such as Dynatrace and VMware Aria Suite.
Further qualifications include experience with backup and storage solutions and business continuity frameworks, alongside a solid understanding of IT governance, change control, and policy administration. You also have demonstrated experience mentoring and leading infrastructure engineers across various projects or functional initiatives. Preferred certifications include VMware VCP, Microsoft Azure Administrator or Architect, and HashiCorp Terraform Associate. Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) and AI Fundamentals (AI-900) are considered valuable assets for this role.
Beyond technical skills, you are a strategic thinker with a passion for continuous infrastructure evolution, and a hands-on leader who thrives on solving complex challenges and enabling others. You possess strong communication skills, able to translate intricate technical concepts into clear business language for executive stakeholders. As a collaborative team player, you value trust, transparency, and shared success, and are digitally savvy and enthusiastic about driving innovation across IT infrastructure.
